It could be? He said that it hasn't given any trouble. But last night he went to start it and it sounded like a drill? I'm guessing the starter bendix isn't kicking out. Either that or the gear broke? What can he do to check it? I will be back Friday but it is his transportation to school. Just my luck we got rid of his truck last week so we can find him something better on gas for college. So I feel really bad right now.

They dont use a bendix! they use a sprag bearing and if this is slipping and he continues to try and start it it will damage the parts and cost a fortune to fix.

Thank y'all very much for the help. He left it at a friends til I get home. I am good with mechanical issues. But have never had a rotax apart. Is this something reasonable to fix? Does anyone have a PDF of the shop manual for this issue?

Thanks a lot! You wouldn't happen to have the special tools needed that you would be willing to rent or loan would ya?

For that you need the V990 service/workshop manual

If your good at fixing things, you'll be fine. This machine is really straight forward. The sprag is a take off and replace deal. There a good Aprilia parts store in Tx. Isn't Aft1 there also. I think so mate.

Ok that latest news, on my breakdown! Ok let me start by saying, your girlfriend's never been so difficult. Like a women though, no matter how different we may be, you just "got" to have her. I became stuck at the gym two days ago. TWO DAYS man! Worked on the bike until 2am, in front of my 24 hr gym. Thank god it was always open, cause this bike is a target even 13 yrs old. I was already to call tow truck. I took off today. Read a few more threads and responses to my original thread and left to have her towed. Now last night in front of the gym, I lifted the tank. Removed airbox cover. Air out the box, cleaned the little bit of gas up. Secured the plug wire heads. I could get one of the fuel breather tubes attached. It actually leaks a little fuel. Most fix! All that and it wouldn't start. Went home discouraged! After going back and forth with you guys, I thought about Kzmille's threat and constant reminder to anyone, that's not using the air-lever ( not choke), for start up. I just turned the key open the air wide, which is not even an inch. You have to pull throttle also. I did and bAm! It roared...and growled like damit ride the crap out of me. So...I did. All the way home. All beginning to understand, she totally hates to be teased. Give her O2 or prepare to wait, and wait. If your bike was pre-owned and you have real history, assume she needs sprag job. The starter system including sprag, is prone to leave you hanging, due to FLOODING. It will start, just not when you want it to. Thank to all!
