    Idle too high

I know I've seen this subject talked about on this forum, but I can't find the thread after searching on idle, IAC, idle air control, etc.

This past weekend, my 2002 Futura would not return to idle at 0 throttle. Coming to a stop, pulling in the clutch, the idle would stay at 1600 rpm. The first couple of times it happened, I would rev the bike a little and it would drop. Then that quit working. What "fixed" it was shifting into neutral. The engine returned to normal idle.

The throttle grip isn't sticking. The bike has been running and starting great since changing to Rick's regulator and updating the wiring with solder and new plugs. Battery if fully charged, and the charging voltage at idle is consistent with others who have performed these mods. The bike has 6600 miles.

Is there a connection between the neutral switch and idle control? I remember reading something similar happening to another forum member in the thread I couldn't find - shift into neutral and the idle would drop to normal.

    Ideas?

This has happened in the past, but I can't recall anyone ever figuring out what connection the 2 have. The high idle is most likely either a weak connection somewhere in the wiring, a vacuum leak, or the IAC stepper starting to fail. Guess you could also have a TPS out of zero.

Clean every electrical connector you can get your hands on that hook up to temp sensors and controls. And while yer under the tank, have a good look at all the hoses.

I'm having the opposite problem intermittently right now - the idle is high in neutral. I vaguely remember another forum post stating that the issue was resolved by cleaning up a shoddy electrical junction in the wiring loom that goes either between the two cylinders or behind the rear cylinder. I haven't torn my bike apart yet to try to find this junction.

I went through the exact same problem with the exact same symptoms.

The bottom line is that I replaced all the vacuum lines and unplugged/cleaned all the electrical connectors. I used a wire brush followed up by contact cleaner. I don't think that removing the PC III affected the idle, but it did cure a unburned fuel issue.

You way want to clean the stepper motor while you have the airbox off. I never did install Stepper Motor #3.

By the way, I replace all the clear vacuum lines (just read buttman's post).
