'07 T Factory Failed Ignition coil

    Hey guys,

This past weekend, I rode the T about 220 miles to VA to start a weekend tour of West VA backroads. If anyone hasn't explored west VA around the New River Gorge, they need to!

Anyway, about 200 miles from our rendevous, the Tuono started but threw a SERVICE error. After checking the diagnostic codes, I got a P-CODE 0352, A-CODE 35, Ignition No.2 set of errors.....

Called my dealer and he said, well, all I can tell you is your not getting ignition on cylinder 2. I figured that since the bike sounded like a bad running KLR650, he was right. I checked all the obvious and nothing....hoping for loose plug wire or coil connection...snapped fuse, etc.

So 427.0 miles of riding back to my driveway, I got to inspecting things tonight.

Here's what I've done so far:
    1. I pulled the rear plug (its new...1500 miles on it) - with it out of the bike, I put the rubber boot on it and grounded the plug and cranked it over....NO SPARK
    2. Pulled the front plug boot and put it on the rear cylinder spark plug....PLENTY of SPARK.

Can I safely assume it is in fact the ignition coil? Anything else I should test? The forum search revealed a small handful of similar issues and it seems its either a coil or bad gas...

Since I rode it home 427 miles, I'm thinking the gas is not an issue....plugged injectors wouldn't cause an ECU error relating to ignition I wouldn't think either...

Any help or advice greatly welcomed!

    Thanks!

If you swapped the wires/coils and its sparking then sounds like you found it.

Those are some great roads, let me know next time!

Is that how you tested it to find out it failed?

Didn't mean to come across that way, just didn't want you to overlook the obvious.

It may also be a dead ignition driver inside the ECU. Easiest to check, try a diffrent coil pack.
When exiting the corner I suddenly ran out of talent and fell off the bike.

Steve I am sure his comment about a wise ass in every crowd was not directed at you. It was directed to the comment in post #3 about driving home with a putt putt aka on only one cylinder.

Yep - that wise-ass in #3 was riding behind my single cylinder, cored exhaust pipe tuono for over 400 miles...what a guy.

I guess if we can't have a little wise-guy fun, what good is it all anyway?

Thanks Greasesnake - I just ordered a used $60 coil and am hoping and praying that is the fix! Used ECU's go for $500 bucks...argh! I read a few posts that stated the ECU could be the issue - that is gonna suck if it is.

I had the same problem on front cylinder on my 07 T. Tried used coil. Nope, it was the ECU. You will need a dealer to transfer settings from the old ECU to the new ECU.

    Just an update....

I found a used coil on eBay and that did not do the trick....same retailer had an ECU for an '07 Tuono that just came in...so $525 later I was back in business.

What a cruddy POS. This really left a bad taste for these things - I realize it can happen to any bike, any brand, etc. I've been completely happy with the bike until this. What really sucks is I just sunk 800 into it for preventative maintenance by doing the 12k mile service (valves adjusted, fork oil changed, all fluids changed, etc.) Just crappy timing.

Just can't believe this is a "fairly common" problem. I bought the parts from RubberSideUpLLC on eBay - awesome dealer by the way, excellent customer service with warranty on his parts. Anyway, he said the ECU's fly out the door as soon as they come in for my "vintage" of Tuono/RSV.

Anyway, bike is running - need to take it for a shakedown and see if the ECU had map-2 on it...seems to idle and rev pretty nice, but I run an air filter and cored pipes, so map2 is necessary.

    Thanks for the help everyone.

    Glad it sorted out.

Well, it's not as common as one would think, it's just that there is not many things that makes these bikes break down so one can keep the few that are in the head

True - its not common...in my original forum search I only found 2 or 3 instances...so, obviously not common.

Sure does make ya think though...for some reason I wish it would have been a failed mechanical piece...ECU's have no moving parts and should be robust...it seems if the ECU fails, its related to the ignition portion of the controller.

Oh well, as you said, at least its sorted. Trying to get out tonight for a good ride to make sure all is well, but work is getting in the way. Grr...
