Exclamation Beware of roads that have "buckled" because of the heat!

Be careful of roads that have "buckled" because of the heat!

We were traveling up 77north towards Cambridge, OH, when we saw some State Troopers with their lights on and flares burning on the highway. Turns out they were slowing traffic to go over a 6-8 inch high bulge in the road seam. I hate to think what would have happened if we hit that at speed..

*I had just seen a vid online showing an SUV catching some major air after hitting a large chunk of buckled highway.

Not something we have to concern ourselves with in the UK........more likely to have gone the opposite way and collapsed under several feet of water......

Saw that SUV launch on the news last nite. Looked like a stunt in the movies. Betcha that got some pulses racing!

Between the heat and not enough money to maintain/fix the roads before they become dangerous, this will just be the beginning. For over a year now, a road I travel has a spot where there's only half the road left after a slide. The answer - put up stop signs and make it a one lane road.

There were three such heat-related road buckles on a highway project I did last summer. Repairing the three (across four lanes) using a contractor already on-site (IOWs no mobilization costs) totaled about $45,000.

I don't have to worry about any of that any more because I retired at the end of April 2012 and don't plan to work again until at least next year.

Right now, I am in the Yukon on a four month trip to Alaska via motor home. My motorcycles sit idle back home as I elected not to bring one along. I see people riding and think I made the right choice. The riding is better back east even if the views here are more spectacular.

Greetings to all since I've not posted here in quite a while.

Its not so much heat related as winter-related, but there are somee roads in IOWA that it just about jars me off the bike! Sometimes they use a grader-tool to shave off a bit, but I wish their tolerance was better and they did some more shaving...

Is that standard procedure in the US? Retire and ride off for 4 months in a motor home?

Better start saving then eh Rick?

I don't know if it's standard procedure, but it is what I decided to do. As far as for the saving part, I have less into the motor home than my Futura. I'll admit I got lucky on the find. A lot of Europeans are here in the US doing the same thing in rented units. For me, that is too expensive. I priced the cost of that and it was about $3k per month... money that is gone when you turn it in.

I chit chat with riding tourists when the opportunity arises. Many are from Europe, but not all. Some ride Harleys, most ride GSs, one was on an FJR like mine. He was 2-up and said he liked the roads. I didn't think the roads were twisty enough for my tastes... but in any case my wife is with me and I had no one to leave my two dogs with. Not enough room for all of us on a bike. If my trip was limited to the lower 48 states I might have taken a bike in tow.

The FJR rider wore out a tire in Dawson City, ordered one from the Yamaha dealer in Whitehorse and had it flown to the hotel here where a guy who works there has a tire changing machine. The flight cost him $20, and I don't know the cost of the tire change, but he was back in business. But he and his passenger wife were not alone. they were traveling with relatives who were in RVs.

Another German couple were 2-up on a GS and had been on the road 11 months, starting in Lima, Peru. When I talked to them, they were in Teslin, Yukon Terr. and had taken the final drive apart at their campsite to find the source of a leak.

A group of riders flew in from various points and rented bikes. Only one was a local from British Columbia.

As for myself, I rode from Orlando to NY state through the Appalachians two weeks before this trip and will take the same bike back south about two weeks after I return to NY this fall. IMHO, the eastern US riding is better... twistier. The riding here represents more of an endurance ride; the roads are not as curvey. The roads have all been paved but the surface is coarse gravel. Where repairs take place, the dust can be extreme. I will go over 50 miles of dirt
