Hahaha, we troll in the ocean with ugly sticks, 30 pound test on penn long beach reels and 3kg lead weights on release sliders.

    Show no mercy!

Sounds fun, but I've got a gig at the Razz Room that night, so don't think I want to start my day that early. Will be on the bay sailing with friends in the afternoon, so we'll keep an eye out for you returning, riding low in the water from your catch no doubt.

Is that a Penn 525MAG you got there Blu? I had one and really could not get on with it, so swapped it for a SLOSH 20. I already have the 30 for rock fishing. But for general clean ground fishing I have a ABU sports mag and the green MAG elite, my favourite reel out of them all. You caught some lovely fish there too, there is nothing round here anymore, unless you want to go specifically for weavers or flounders.Matt, that gear your using for salmon really does sound over the top for such a fish, can they not be caught on light line set ups using deep diving lures??

Well the issue with trolling is you have 25 rods over the side at 5 or 6 knots and we have to make the presentation look like a school of fish. Yes the gear is heavy but we do get up to15kg king salmon and better, also when sea lions find us we have to make quick work to land the fish.

We do mooch in better weather, different hook setup and we drift but we won't see mooching action till August or September I think.

My kid a few years back, not the biggest that day by far.

Spot on Chris mag 525. I've had them since they first came out, had sloshes in the past great reels but i find the spool sits a little high for me to get my thumb round for serious dstance work. My general set up is the pen mags strapped to a pair of Zipplex full tournament 13'6" bit over the the top but most of my fishing used to be over rough ground at distance. I also use them for tournament comps with abu mags tournament converted.

That's an awful lot of rods out off one boat Matt, crikey, the last time I went out to sea on a boat was to do some wreck fishing, and there were only 8 of us and 8 rods out, and that caused a few headaches, just down tiding. Nice fish your son has there, catching a salmon at sea would be a miracle over here, even the more common species are getting hard to catch. I know what you mean about the sloshes Blu, I don't really use them for distance work, the 30 I use for dropping down into deep crevices or pier work with heavier lines as even small wrasse and pollock will have you snagged in a blink. I use a Penn extreme Nor-easter for my rough ground fishing, its a 2 piece 14 footer, and is ideal for this kind of work, but still has the ability to show small bites at a distance. Clean ground I use a Grey's syntra 13'6 and a 15 foot Penn Firestick, which is my favourite rod, as it can be used anywhere and also with a fixed spool reel if needed. I have a 13 foot rod I can carry over my shoulder on the bike too, it is a Diawa wilderness travel beach caster, it is a 4 piece and is in a travel tube so safe to carry. It has a really good action for a 4 piece and isn't too heavy either. I think I will have to visit chesil beach as I have only ever seen good results for the place.
