Honest Opinions Needed on The Aprilia Shiver

    Hi Folks,

I'm currently riding a 2010 Triumph Tiger SE and thinking about down sizing to the Aprilia. Have owned (and raced) numerous bikes in the past including Ducati and I'm looking for a fun, reliabe bike that will be used mostly for pleasure and occasional 2-up riding.

What are your thoughts on the bike and are there any major concerns?

    Thanks in advance

    Rob

I bought my '09 last Thursday in Medford, Oregon with 1600 miles on the clock. Flew up and rode it back to Las Vegas. 800 miles and the bike did great, my butt on the other hand was quite numb. Just over 2500 miles on her now and the bike has been running great even in the heat around town. I had never seen one up close until buying this one and I have to say the fit and finish is fantastic. Pulled some panels and poked around out of curiosity. The wiring isn't a mess and everything seems to be well placed and easy to get to if you are the do-it-yourself type. I sold my '99 Triumph Legend to buy this bike and I do not regret it one bit. Both great bikse but I wanted something different. As for long term... I couldn't tell you. Haven't had any problems yet, but service intervals are equal to the Triumphs. 12K valve adjustments and what not.

Before you buy make sure there is someone in your area for service. There aren't a lot of dealerships and some of the existing ones aren't really knowledgeable about the Shiver. The other thing I have run into is the lack of aftermarket parts.

I kind of see that as a blessing rather than a curse - Keeps the bike clean, keeps the wallet and the Missus happy too!

+1 maddad - I love my Shiver, but no one can tell you if you'd love one too

Thanks for the feedback, 12k valve adjustments are manageable and I do all of the maintenance myself. Wanted to make sure there were no known quality issues with the motor. I'm working on a deal now with a dealer in town for a 2012, he's looking $8800 +.

If the valves haven't been checked yet on one, then they should be. The Piaggio motors usually need an adjustment at the first service. Both of mine (RSV4 too) were out of spec at low milage. After that, your good to go.

That is one thing I noticed to, you take it out and when you come back you have to put fuel in again.

I am a contractor for Piaggo and had a chance to be a lead rider at a US dealer convention. Spent a lot of time on the Shiver and they are awesome. What kind of fueld range are you seeing per tankful?

I've had mine for 2 years and the only problem I've had is the warning light shorting out in the rain, which was cured with some silicone. Bottom end surging is the only minor annoyance I've found, but mine's a 2009 not sure if updated maps fix this or not. Otherwise it's been flawless. My dealer was telling me the other day how they never see Shivers in the shop, they're so reliable. My 2 cents.
