    Tuono RR shock swap ?

    Hello,

I want some more adjustability on my rear shock.
The current 1000R unit has only 2 adjustment and no resevoir.

I see an RSV4 Sachs unit for sale on AF1.
It is same length, and same mounting holes.

Would this make a good replacement, without going whole hog on the Ohlin's ?

If the spring rate is different, I can change the spring from the original Sachs unit.

    Comments ?

Rsv4 units wont work due to the location of the reservoir

The resevoir is lower on the RSV4 shock vs the Ohlin Tuono.
The only other difference is RH vs LH resevoir.
Is this why it won't fit ?

    Thanks

I replaced the stock shock on my 2007 Tuono R with the sachs unit from a 2009 RSV, and have been very happy with it. Not sure what I am missing - I have never ridden one with the Ohlins. I did it a couple weeks ago, and I have ridden about 350 miles on it so far. Install was easy. It has a few more adjustments than the stocker, particularly adjustable compression damping and adjustable ride height. I have heard that the adjustable ride height in the back can help with fine tuning turn-in feel, and I am about to try my first track day on Friday. Thought that might be useful. I am not a particularly skilled rider. 99.9% of my riding will always be done on the street, and I did not feel compelled to go for the Ohlins. I placed a "WTB" ad in the parts for sale section on this forum, and had several responses within a few days from sellers with RSV shocks. I think there are a lot of them out there.

The RSV shocks are also available on eBay, although I can't imagine paying more than $150 for one.

aj_day - Can you feel a noticeable difference in ride quality or does it just offer more adjustments over stock?

I definitely notice a minor difference in ride quality. The back end feels slightly more supple in terms of small bump absorbtion, and a little bit stiffer overall. Not what I would call a night and day difference, but noticeable and positive. I had adjusted the old stock unit to factory settings, then increased preload a little bit, but I still felt like it was a little soft for my weight. I am sure I could have addressed that with a heavier spring, but I decided to start with a little better shock before I started messing with springs. I downloaded the RSVR manual and adjusted the new RSVR shock to stock settings before I put it on the bike. I would say I am happy with it. It certainly was a cheap upgrade. I don't think I will need to replace the spring on this one. I have not made any adjustments from stock to date, but I anticipate messing with it in the future after some more aggressive riding. I am hoping that the increased adjustability will make an even bigger positive impact when I mess with it some more and get it set up. I am taking some performance riding classes at the track this summer, and one of them has a unit that deals with suspension setup. I am waiting to get crazy with the adjustments until I gets me a little more ed-joo-kay-shun.

A little more data if you are interested. I did my first track day ever last Friday, with the RSV shock on the tuono. Bike feels noticeably more balanced front to back than the stock unit, and I am very pleased with the improvement. The stock shock at stock settings had 38mm of loaded sag, the RSV shock with stock settings had 32mm of loaded sag. This may be due to individual variation between springs, or the RSV shock may come with a slightly stiffer spring. Either way the improvement is at least as good, and probably better than I hoped for.
