BMW 1200 GS gearbox and shaft drive U/S...Expensive!!!!!

Guys we all go on about our Capo's having the odd problem now and again etc, but you have to feel sorry for the guy who owns this 18 month old GS 1200...

I spotted it in the workshop of my local BMW dealer yesturday when out for a spin the Capo.

I spoke to one of the mechanics, and it was the 2nd time this bike had been in, this time for a new gearbox and shaft drive splines...

Think I will stay away from buying one of these BMW's, whilst the Capo has its faults...... they are very easy to fix compared to buying new gearboxes etc....

    Long live the Capo.....Name: P140612_11.15.jpg

Lol, imagine buying a bike where a basic wearing engine consumable (le clutch) requires you to guillotine your bike in half to change.

For me, BMW 1200Gs adventeru is a bomb. My dream bike.
I have quite a few friends that had thought that and now they are their nightmare bike.

I have one particular mate that had a 2010 1200 GS that in his first year of ownership had the bike back to the workshop for a collective period of over 2 months. Ok, it was covered by warranty, but he just wanted to ride it, not have to ask for visitation rights from the dealer. List of bits that failed: ECU, rear wheel bearing. clutch actuator, ECU again, and lastly lost tooth on the primary gear.

He has since sold the bike and bought a Yamaha Tenere 660. 45k and not a problem.

I really like BMW generally, but this sort of reliability is a problem. Maybe the newer ones are better, and for the price they charge, they should be.
    Ride it like its stolen

I'm guessing BM's out sourcing all over the place is coming back to bite them...
Yup,all for the KISS approach hence my Capo gets 99% DIY servicing and is rarely off the road

How hard are you on clutches?
Guzzis are a similar design (dry, engine speed clutch) and aside from one which was faulty and flew apart, I've changed maybe two or three - amonmg about 15 bikes and probably 400,000km on the marque.
One nice thing about a dry clutch: no contamination of engine oil with frictive material. Perhaps one reason why Guzzi engines regularly turn 100 or even 200,000 km without needing a rebuild.
I'd like to die on Mars. Just not on impact.
The appropriate number of cylinders for any motorcycle is two.

I suspect many maybe dont take notice of the adjustment freeplay or lack of...
