Atlantic 500 Regulator possibly bad? Any generic swap avaiL?

    HI all,
The wife has an Aprilia Atlantic 500 she bought 3 months ago. I noticed that the voltage on the display only reads 11.5-11.8 during driving and the battery has gone dead once. (I recharged with my charger)
I am guessing this may be the faulty Voltage regulator problem? Or bad battery. May have to download a service manual on do some voltage testing.
I have done quite a bit of searching and have come across a honda vrf400 repair:
    http://homepage.eircom.net/~moylan/A...Regulator1.mht

but also see others that use a mosfet? or shanghai or shindengen ? (think I mispelled that)
Is there a sticky on this Mod/ repair? (cant seem to find it on the site)
Dealer wants over 230.00 for a oem VR. (ouch!)
Any help or where to look appreciated
    Thanks! :-)

I would go with the mosfit as they are proven to be bullet proof. They say the OEM regulator is made different than original but I went with Mosfit and saved $100.

There are no sticky's on mosfit installation for Atlantic 500 but there is one for the Beo. http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/s...45#post2870045. It will not help as the regulator for the Atlantic is behind the seat but will give you an idea of how the regulator looks and what wires to cut. Really it is very simple to install. I did it to my Atlantic and it was the 1st time I've ever done anything like it. I installed within the 1st three months of ownership. I installed rear chrome rack and got familiar with removing rear panel.
If you buy the shindengen mosfit regulator, the guy will send you instructions and his number to call if you are having trouble setting it up. Real nice person. You will need to solder some wires on the unit, not the scooter, but it was easy. If you don't have a soldering iron, buy the cheapest you can find. The wires and connectors are very small and will not take a lot to melt and stick together. Again, he gives you step by step instructions to setup.
Removing the old regulator and installing the new one requires you to remove the rear panel. There is no need to remove the sides. You may need a owner's manual on how to remove, but you start under the set near passenger backrest. The area is small but enough to work with. The mosfit regulator sets on a shelf and you will only be able to use one of the two existing holes for bolts. But I think that is OK since I've put over 12K miles on the regulator with no problems except human error.

Once you get this installed, most of your electrical problems go away.

    Good luck

Thanks for the info. Do you have the info (or web site) on the guy with the shindengen mosfit regulator?
I have a soldering iron and am fairly handy with electronics, so hope it is not overly nasty job.
    thx

I bought one from eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/UNIVERSAL-MO...71921d&vxp=mtr. Installation in my AA500 was very easy. I did have to build up the shelf that the regulator sits on to clear one of the back panels. I have been very happy with the Mosfet after going through two OEM R/R's.

This one has the fuse. I'm not sure if the things trips, that I want to go back under the plastic to change a fuse. I have a breaker on mines. It just shuts off when there are problems. Comes back on when everything is good again. I know this from experiance.

As an FYI, the fuse sits in the battery compartment.

After my spring tune-up, I hooked up battery's wires wrong. On a normal occasion, that would have blown battery but with mosfit low voltage reading and shut off until I corrected red and black wires.

Thanks for the help gang. I received the new regulator today. Did a quick hookup and test. My voltage on display now reads 13.1 - 13.4 while driving and idle is about 12.1-12.4 range. I doubt the onboard voltage is accurate but at least I no longer have the flashing EFI light and dropping below 12V !

One question, the VR gets mighty warm and toasty..is this normal? Should I add an heatsink or additional metal to mounting plate?

    Thanks !

I replaced my factory regulator today with a MOSFET unit. (I have been meaning to get to it for several weeks, but too many other things have kept me from doing so.)
I ended up following a suggestion made by Jack at roadstercycle.com and left the old unit in place; just cut and taped off the yellow wires. After drilling one new hole in the plate, I have the MOSFET unit on top of the plate and the original regulator below. I don't know what the other wires from the original unit are for so I just left them connected.
I need to finish putting everything back together tomorrow. I'll let you all know how it worked.
    Safe riding.
