It doesnt matter where you drill them, its the fact that there just holes and not tubes, it will actualy reduce airflow instead of increasing it as you get a vortex from the edges of the hole, Airboxes all got tubilar intakes to "straighten" the airflow as it comes into the airbox.
And like i said, it makes for a much nicer, deeper/heavier sound with out becomming anoyingly louder, and wen you drive it normaly you wont atrackt the atencion of the cops because the bike runs better at all throttle positions and doesnt make a loud/weird noise at half throttle etc.
