2004 RSVR Engine fit a 1999 RSV Frame

    Evening everyone

I have a poorly 1999 SP with a leaking seal or other problem with the rear pot, spark plugs have been fouled, the front pot is lightly browned so running fine.
The motor starts on the button and doen't seem to have losted any power, doesn't smoke much if any at start up but once run and warmed up turning the engine off for a couple of minutes and on again a large plume of whitish smoke and I must turn off the enigne.

I am looking at fixing this engine anyway but my question is would a 2004 RSVR engine fit in a 1999 RSV frame?

I'm asking as I've seen an engine with 9000 miles going and its a good price.

The engine will fit in the frame but you will have to use all the electrics from your current engine and make simple modifications to the front head to fit the cam position sensor. Your current exhaust will not bolt up to the 04 engine so you will have to modify it or fit a system from an 04 or later RSVR or 06 on Tuono.

    Thanks Kzmille

may have to pick the engine up as I'm promised a custom exhaust as some point so this may be worth a custom project.

I have read on this forum the SP exhaust system has the same exhaust port shape as the 2004+ rsv. But in contradiction to this, vonDutch is using a 2-2 SP shotgun system on his Falco that has an 01-03 Mille engine fitted. Not sure what to believe. I do know that the 04+ RSV headers do not pass the early oil cooler, and some 04+ systems do not fit through the early swingarm. Anything can be made to fit with a bit of clever cutting and welding. It is possible to swap the swingarm and rads for the later setup, but on a Mille this will foul the fairing. There is a solution though, Smaltmoto make a header system to fit the early bikes but it has the late style exhaust flanges.

You can save all these problems by fitting an 01-03 Mille or 02-05 Tuono engine. They are the same.

I have an 02 Mille R engine for sale cheap that needs a stator and flywheel. I sold them to a forum member here.

Dunno much about SP engines, but what you describes sounds like a leaking/torn clutch membrane on the normal engine. The normal ones use the rear pot to get the vacuum for the slipper clutch. When it is torn, it starts to suck oil. If the SP engine has one, I would check that first before buying and swapping engines. You wouldn't be the first one swapping an engine over a faulty 40 bucks membrane.

You need a clutch diaphragm not a new motor...my bet!
