    Cam chain rattle, 3500rpm.

My falco has developed a cam chain rattle when accelerating through roughly 3500rpm. It's pretty noisy and i can hear it over the aftermarket cams. Sounds like the cam chain wants to escape!

Im presuming this is not a normal noise (i know these engines are very noisy) and i need to know what i should do about it. How hard is it to change the tensioner?

    any guidance is appreciated.

    Dale

which year is your falco ? if 1999 or 2000, changes the chain tensioner.
the part that give pressure to the chain. # 9

those parts were not strong enought on first models.
it works with the oil presssure and the old oil stay into it, and make them stop working...

I hope you understand me.... changes those 2 parts, done on mine 2 years ago.

Yeah it is an early one. 2000 or 2001 I believe.

Is it just part number 9 i need or do i need parts 10 and 11 as well?

looking at its position on the engine it doesn't seem like such a hard job. Am I being nieve?

    Thanks,

    Dale

Really weird, the site didnt post my reply.

Its either a 2000 or 2001 model. It's red, anyway.

Is it just part 9 i need, or will i need 10 and 11 as well?

Doesn't look like a hard job. is that correct? Anything i need to remember like crank position or anything?

    Thanks

    Dale

red models were made early - they were the faster ones along with the black ones

so its 1999 or 2000 - may have been registered later

Pete's right about the year. Lift the saddle and look for the sticker on the subframe rail - that will tell you when it was manufactured and the market it was built for.

It will be the tensioner, not the chain.
I have seen many of these bikes with big miles on them & not changed a chain yet.
Plenty of tensioners have been changed though.

Apologies, i meant te cam chain tensioner has been ordered.

Am i right in thinking that there is a tensioner on each cylinder? If so - how do i know which one to replace?

False economy to do one. If one is knackered, the other wont be far behind

But rear one is so much easier to replace than the other ......... If that is the only one worn out, then I would only replace that one!

Another thing to note is lateral play in the secondary balance shaft between the rear head camshafts can also cause noise. This kind of sounds like a train moving. You know, the sound the train wheels make transferring between consecutive rails. ch .. ch .. ch .......... ch .. ch............... ch .. ch .. ch .......... ch .. ch............... ch .. ch .. ch .......... ch .. ch............... ch .. ch .. ch .......... ch .. ch............... ch .. ch .. ch .......... ch .. ch...............

The rattle is definitely more of a cam chain rattle. Anyhow, how would i check the balance shaft for lateral play? is it something i can do while I am in there checking the valves?

You'll need a DTI (Dial Test Indicator)

    DTI Purchased.

So how do i check the free play and what would be considered as too much play?

    Thanks,

    Dale
