    Exclamation Blew it up, continuing story WITH PICS

    Had a chance to start tearing down the Beo this afternoon. As I got all the body parts off, here's what I saw. What's missing here?

    The astute among you (or at least not blind) will quickly notice that there's a hole where the dipstick is supposed to be. How could THAT happen?!?
    This shot shows a little more of the head/block joint, which at least in this view looks to be OK.

    Yeah, I know, you can't tell from the outside if the gasket is blown or not. My semi-educated guess at the moment is that the oil plug blew off somewhere, causing the engine to go into oil-starvation which in turn overheated and warped the head. I'm hoping to see intact parts when I pull the head tomorrow.....

    One more shot, this one from above looking at the carb.

    I'm still trying to figure out how ALL the coolant got out and all over everywhere. As I pulled the airbox off the carb, a bunch of green slime trickled out -- it was even inside the airbox!!
    So at this point, I'm figuring on a light mill on the head to flatten it out, new head gasket, teardown and clean the carb, and just for insurance replace all the coolant lines. What else?
    I'm done for the day. Got a date with Mr. Beefeaters tonight....

    One last thought, since I obviously have to find a new dipstick. Is it common for these things to disappear like mine did? It wasn't loose -- I cranked it down pretty good last time I was in there about 100 miles ago. Is this just something to add to the pre-flight check every time I ride? Has anybody thought of modifying these things to accept safety wire?

    Tom, YOU DA MAN. always feel better when I see a response from you.
    One good thing, if I have to go that far... I have the OEM head, piston, and cam that came out of it when it got all the Malossi bits installed. It's such a gas to ride with the mods, I hate to go back to stock but it neats the alternative.
    I'll know more tomorrow....
    Hey, where do I find a head gasket for this thing? I'm pretty sure the FLAPS won't have one, and I didn't see anything on the AF1 site. Any thoughts?
    Thanks

    There is a pretty thorough discussion on the overheat issue and oil dipstick blowout if you follow this thread to the end:

    Rotax = joy and pain

    the green slime of which you speak is nothing but water mixed with oil. Basically you have burned the head gasket. follow the reasoning.
    The water is very slowly drawn into the oil sump or through the water pump or through the head gasket. meeting at this point the hot oil has evaporated and you blew up the oil cap.
    Change the head gasket but also controlled by the water pump.
