mini ride report on WV, PA, NY "Sunday Ride". (wildguzzi crosspost!)

*pretty much a crosspost from Wildguzzi-

We ended up at 388 miles traveled on our Sunday ride. It didn't start out to be an "all dayer", but that's way it ended up!
Our ride started as a trip up to Cook forest and Allegheny Nat'l Forest to snap some pics, but since we were "kind of" close to the border of NY/PA, we decided to run up into NY. We almost reached a town called "Busti", we may have to revisit that place. Sounds interesting.
The Google map has the prime roads in highlight. *68 to Clarion, Miola Rd to Cook Forest, 899 to 66, to 948, to 62, to 69....then caught 957w to 79. 2 1/2 hours on 79 towards home. I hate being on the slab going 70mph for that long, but had to take time of day in to consideration.)

Find myself on 68 quite a bit. Last year, saw a Breva in the next town past East Brady - Rimersburg. From there I'll usually cut across to Punxsetawney and then head back south and west for a 200 mile loop - no interstates. Lots of greenery and fun 2 lane roads in that part of PA. That friend of mine was in Green County a week ago and said the roads were in horrible shape from all the big trucks hauling water for the shale fracking. Hopefully you saw better asphalt.

I spent my weekend on a ladder in service to the 3 story mistress (aka my "this old house") - pathetic!

We didn't run into any road issues on 8 out of Wexford...or any other roads that I can think of. Got lucky again!!! Although we did have a lunatic pass us on the right side shoulder of the road near Neville Island! I looked in the mirrors and saw two vehicles passing us....one in the passing lane and one on the right shoulder. No way out of that one!!

Looks like there are some decent back roads on the way to Punxsetawney. Might have to check'em out. We're always looking for new routes! Although we have bad memories of going through there . We did a 575 mile day a few years back, and drove through Punxsetawney on our way back home. By that part of the trip, we were just wanting to be home!!

Another weekend on the ladder?????? I just got reminded of a song maybe you should listen to Rick. It was on the last episode of House.. Loise Prima -Enjoy yourself, It's later than you think!!!!
You're gonna take that ocean trip, no matter, come what may
You've got your reservations made, but you just can't get away
Next year for sure, you'll see the world, you'll really get around
But how far can you travel when you're six feet underground?

    I'm kidding!!!

575 in one day, makes my butt hurt just thinking about that many miles in one day!

Once or twice in my youth, I've misjudged passing times and found myself between the car I was passing and the car that I was looking at coming to me. Can remember saying outloud "everyone stay calm, there's lots of room". But having cars go around on both sides at once and one on the shoulder, geeze Richy, where's the po- leece when ya need 'em! Bad enough, but at least you saw it coming. Just imagine your pulse rate if it took you by surprise!

While scraping, sanding and painting the trim over my front porch(10x25ft and inside the porch) I found some nice trim with detail hidden by 100 years of bad painting. Underneath the paint I found oak so I can't just paint that. It never ends. Tonight I'm removing a leaded glass window over the front doors to get it out of harm's way (harm = heat gun). I've got a couple more weeks of pounding to get things under control, then I can enjoy the summer.

And the 575 wasn't even all highway! We ended up leaving Troy, NY early in the a.m. and going down thru the Catskills (after a flash flood! Emergency vehicles everywhere), then going cross country to get onto 80.(not very fond of 80). *I80 story -- We did see 2 Harleys stuck up to their frames in newly poured asphalt!. They thought they would go around the barrels on the highway to pass the line of traffic in the left lane. As soon as they pulled into the blocked lane, they both stuck like lawn darts in brand new asphalt. Imagine the money for that - Fines, repaving, bike removal, cleaning, road crew's time.
The guy continued to pass cars on the shoulder till he was out of sight. I figured that we would hear something on the news that evening. I usually like to look for a way out of being boxed in by cars, but this was one of those "oh oh" moments. Just hold your line and see what happens!
Yep.. I like the look of natural wood. Once it's covered, it's a pain to get back that beauty... Is that lead glass still flowing???????

575 miles? Damn that sounds fun.
When I lived in San Fran in 1994 I was riding with a small group that would go on ALL DAY Sunday rides. Leave The City around 9am and get home 12 hours later. Those were some Good Rides. I wish I could have been on this one you just posted about.

That's too funny. Maybe Harley Davidson will come out with a new model in honor of those guys - the Pompeii! Wouldn't you have loved to be a fly on the wall when the magistrate dropped the hammer, erm gavel!

I dunno about flowing, but replacing any one of those bits of 100 year old glass would not be something I want to do. Might take another set of hands on a 2nd ladder to help get that window out safely. I have a big, heavy, leaded, prism glass window that should be in my front door. One day before I'm too old to see it, I'll have the 7 missing pieces ground and have the entire window re-leaded. It was a beauty when new. The former residents pounded it to death slamming that door.

Too bad it was before I kept a little digital camera in my jacket pocket!

I know some old lead glass will start sagging a bit after a long, long while.

That old world craftsmanship is awesome though. Sounds like you're carrying on the tradition. Stained glass windows and doors are neat also.

The redhead was getting a tab bit anxious! She like the adventure of it though.. (I'm lucky!)

I don't know if that old glass really sags or the quality back then just left it wavy. You can actually buy glass made with that old sagged look now.

Lots of stained/leaded windows in that old house of mine - one of the reasons I bought it in the 1st place.

Here ya go, can you say egg and dart. There's about 25 ft of it that's now nearly stripped. Thankfully, it was painted over top of the original varnish. Once the varnish gets hot and liquidy, the paint just slides off.

Well.... I looked it up. Glass does not sag or "flow". Another myth debunked!

Yikes! You can hardly see the detail with all that paint on there!

My grandmother's place in Steubenville, OH had lots of detailed woodwork (inside and out). I always liked that place. It also had the sliding doors between rooms on the first floor.

This past trip had us up in Warren, PA. Lots of beautiful old buildings and houses. (the "State Hospital" is there too. Don't pick up any hitchhikers!)

I was just gonna repaint that trim it until I saw it was all white oak. The job immediately got bigger. Dat's OK. It never should have been painted. But in a way, all that paint protected that nice stuff for a long while. Much like the outdoor carpeting that was glued down to the oak floors for 30 years - doh, my liver will never be the same.

My house had 2 pocket doors originally. They were removed to make room in the walls for heat ductwork when it was converted to apartments in the early 40s. Before that, the house had a dirt floor basement( no furnace) and individual gas burners in every room. The foyer still has the original coal burning fireplace with a green tile surround. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Tons of character at the cost of a lonely Futura.
