    Had this happen twice ;

    1st was the fuel pump relay, situated next to the oil filler,on the frame rail.As you look at the bike, there are four relays, two of which are the same. The one on the right powers the fuel pump.If you don't hear a whine from the tank when you turn on the ignition,it is probably this relay at fault.

    2nd was the tilt switch - designed to kill the engine if the bike leans over more than a predetermined amount,ie:when it falls over.It is situated behind the clocks.

    BTW - WAFO!

    And let's not forget about that connection in the loom behind the right radiator.

    Also check the killswitch. When my RSV started cutting out at speed it was due to water ingress at the right hand switchgear.

    also the key.
    when it dies, does the dash go out as well
    or just the engine stops?

    if just the engine stops then could be many things. mostly mentioned above.
    if the dash dies as well look at the key switch.

    My bike died once on my recent trip...of course on a tiny twisty road in the middle of nowhere! It wouldn't restart until it cooled a bit...engine would crank but not catch...on a dry day. It only happened once but left me feeling less confident in the bike. Since I've checked a number of things, I will go after the right side harness issue probably next winter unless it happens again. I don't remember what the dash did except I think it acted normally.

    about 4/5 years ago, i spent the whole summer not knowing wtf the thing would do every time shut it off and then tried to restart. Bypassing the sidestand switch and cleaning up some other connectors fixed it.

    I had already bypassed the sidestand switch and the tipover switch worked when I dropped the bike last spring due to clutch not disengaging. I did go over all connectors two winters ago but haven't looked at the harness yet. The bike performed flawlessly in heavy rain on the slab...and that made me happy!

    Just make a small hole at the lowest point of the sheath behing the RH cooler.
    If water and stuff comes out you know you will have problems reocurring.

    I have two cables with me which I can power the fuel pump directly from the battery if needed.

    Sounds like a very smart idea! I do carry a spare fuel pump relay but the bike started before I had a chance to listen for fuel pump whirr at key-on.

    Excellent news. There can't be many long term Aprilia owners who haven't suffered at the hands of a failing side stand switch. Makes me wonder if there wouldn't be a market for some inventive chap to make a reliable replacement. I know I would buy one.

    I've got one! An option offered by Ultimate Parts after 2 of the original type failed over the years (they always seem to crack in the same place and let water in)...........just checked it prior to trip starting next week and its still looking good.
