    battery Problems?

My 2007 Vespa GTS250ie stalled and would not run about 3 weeks ago. Turns out it was the battery. It would not hold a charge and it had min. cranking power. So replaced it and have been good to go...for about 3 weeks. Now the new battery is doing the same thing. Now, it could be I got a bum battery, but I find that unlikely.

More likely would be the Alternator or Voltage regulator. Is there a simple voltmeter test for these items?

    Thanks

Voltage regulator IF you have tested the Alternatig Current side of the system and it is in good shape. AC VOLTAGE at idle should be 18-28VAC and at half of redline 40+VAC. You must unplug stator leads (all yellow or at least same color) to test stator. Stator problems are rare compared to regulators which are FAR more common. If stator is good DC charging (measured at battery terminals) charging should be 13.2-14.7VDC at idle and 13.4-14.7 at any other rpm.

If you just want to shoot in the dark and probably hit the bullseye just replace the regulator. If you do your own work and are basically handy with tools it is only secured by two bolts and two wiring quick connectors. It usually takes me about 15-25 minutes to do the full job on a GTS/GTV.

I put a LiFe battery in mine the other day. That thing weighs about the same as the stock wires going to the stock battery and has a hell of a lot of stored amps! I went ahead and used the biggest possible high tech battery since it was sitting there taunting me...
