Why have desmo at 9,500rpm,

Surprised you of all people asked that, desmo isn't just about valve control at high rpm, it also reduces the parasitic losses from driving the valve train when compared to valve spring engines. Way back when I was doing some research on such matters I tested two near identical engines a 900ss(desmo) and a 900gts(valve spring), it took an extra 3.5kw to drive the valve spring motor at 8000rpm, quite a significant amount on motors producing ~45kw.

I was in shock at the comparison test of european liter bikes when they rated the Panigale so poorly. All the test riders were underwhelmed.
