    noisy top end HELP

hi all, out on the rideout sunday when my 2001 rsv developed a loud noise it appears to be come from the top end, advice please, the motor revs sweet still - it is very noisy in tickover, a mechanic has had it apart - we thought it might be timing chain-tensioners, he says they are ok, a mate say maybe balance shaft ?? any ideas as to where to go next , this one is a bit of a baffle, mechanic thinks it may be coming from the rear cylinder, but as said before the motor revs ok and it does go quieter many thanks in anticipation

Sounds like my bike? Still does great long wheelies. Should I drop it down a little sooner!

Aprilia V-twins noisy buggers. Some one asked me recently if my bike has a dry clutch like a Ducati! I had to tell them no! it's really that loud as normal.

I second the ear plugs idea. I literally never ride without them.

To Mr RollsRoyce, I had a simular issue, I thought the top end was noisey, I even replaced both camchain tensioners (hydrolic) and shimmed it too, and then I learned they all sound loud on idle..... could have saved myself $$$$$$$$, now the ear plugs are cheap!

put a vid or sound clip up. but fyi these motors have solid tappet buckets and are shimmed to suit (no adjustment like hydraulic tappets that calm down once they get oil in them). similar kind of clunkyness to ducati's desmodromic valve system that is a bit ticky until you get it spinning quickly.
i thought mine had something wrong as i could only hear 1 tick out of the 8 valves but all my clearances were spot on and it hasnt changed at all in 2 years.

up to you if you want to tear it to pieces or not though.

You've received solid advise from knowledgeable aprilia people and you bash it as juvenile remarks then insist you know better than they do. My suggestion is completely tear down the motor. Replace and rebuild everything. THEN get some earplugs because the noise is still going to be there. Have fun.

Look, it's possible he really has a problem but we've seen many new owners worrying about sounds that are normal. The thing is, how can anyone diagnose a "noise" via a forum?

Not very well actually. If you think you really have a problem you need to tear into it and find out what it is if you are capable and if not find someone local that knows the bikes and get them to listen to it.

in reply, firstly i am not a new aprilia owner, and if you think a crass reply "quote" get earplugs" (is expert knowledge ?) then god help us, and it is not a normal sound either, i know aprilias well enough by now, still thankyou for some of you trying to help, i will go elsewhere for advice, goodbye

If I understand you correctly, the engine is now torn down for a complete check over? Did you check/analyze the oil coming out of the engine? If so, anything noticed, particles, metals or such?

It's often difficult to spot from where a sound occurs in these thin walled alloy engines, especially in higher revs when all other noises might drown the actual issue.

Noise often means something has too much clearance..
When exiting the corner I suddenly ran out of talent and fell off the bike.

My apologies for the snappy answer. These engines are really rather trouble free. They are not prone to major failures. They will spin a rod bearing if over revved a lot and that will make a loud noise. You would definitely want to pull the magnetic plug and oil filter and look for anything abnormal. Honestly for someone who is familiar with these engines you didn't really give us much to go on and if your mechanic has had it apart, as you say, I'm puzzled that you haven't found the problem.

Anyway, sorry I was not more helpful.

Hey rollsroyce. Come on this is a bike forum. You have to expect a little chain yanking from time to time. No need to get all girly on us! Us Brit's have a tougher skin than that! Well good luck with you bike, I hope it is not serious.

This forum is also 100% the best place to go to find out information on our bikes. I honestly don't think you will find a better place to swap information or obtain help! Come on? lets all shake hands and be friends.

Or else its RSVR.NET and Tuonozone? and yea I'm a ex-pat living on the other side of the pond. God save the queen!

haha! I love this place! I'm saying improper oil level. If you ever come back and want to get proper advice, make sure you provide better information. You will not find any other forum on the planet with this level of condescension and wisdom, in regards to all Aprilia.
