Pray for Paul Lima GP Cycles San Diego

Hey all....I am gathering some rather sketchy information however it appears Paul Lima from GP Cycles in San Diego was in a moto cross accident and broke his back. I am told he has had surgery and is now recovering, hoping not
to be paralyzed. If anyone has anything to add please do, additionally lets all pray for him and his family on this Easter Sunday.

    Best,

Damn, tough to catch the "good" kind of break in the last few years for him. Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery.

Just left hospital after short visit with Paul. It was very surreal. I just saw the guy at the shop 2 weeks ago. Its hard imagining what life could potentially be like for him and his family. It was hard to keep emotions in check on both sides. Paul was very optimistic and hopeful that things will improve.

I pray that God will heal him completely.

He is planning on getting transfered to San Diego, closer to home.

Paul is a one in a million guy. A phenomenal rider, an enthusiast to the core, an encyclopedic knowledge of motorcycles, and a genuinely good guy. It's still hard for me to wrap my head around this. I would like to solicit input for getting some sort of fundraiser together to help him and Erin cope with the medical expenditures. They are likely to exceed anything that his insurance will cover. Maybe a ride of some sort. The main thing is that we continue to hold Paul and his family in our thoughts and prayers.

How about a ride that starts at GP and ends here at Aprilia Sherman Oaks. We are certainly in for the financial piece.

This in today from Balz Renggli:

    Dear Friends,

First off, Paul , his family and myself, were overwhelmed and humbled by the incredible out-reach and get well wishes from all of you. Thank you so very much! Calls and messages arrived from all around the country and in fact the world. It is wonderful for Paul to know how many people he has touched in some ways and how many friends he has who really do care for him!

On Monday, Paul moved from the hospital where he had the back surgery to Sharp Rehabilitation Center in San Diego. This is much closer to his family and it is where he will start his rehab work. I saw him last night and he was out of his bed and had been in his wheelchair for most of the day. It wouldn’t be Paul if he wasn’t extremely anxious to start his rehab program and after 1 day at the new place he already feels like he is not doing enough and wants to double up on the rehab program! All this less than a week after breaking his back and enduring a 9 hour surgery! This of course is no surprise to anyone who knows Paul but I am still very happy to see this spirit in him. While we were watching the MotoGP races together last night, I told him that he just started the biggest race of his life, but he was starting in last position so he can only move up!! Knowing Paul’s mental strength and stubbornness, I refuse to believe that he will not walk again.

We are starting to work with a foundation that provides financial support for spinal injury victims and spinal injury research. We will soon start a fundraising effort with this foundation to help Paul and his family to ease the financial burden of things not covered by his health insurance and family expenses, as well as to support medical research efforts directed at spinal cord injuries. As soon as we iron out the details, I will let you know how you can participate in this effort.

In the meantime, please feel free to call or text Paul on his cell phone at 619-851-8522. If you wish to send him something or visit him, he is at

    Sharp Rehabilitation Center
    Room 151
    2999 Health Center Dr.
    San Diego, CA 92123

    Visiting Hours are 8am – 8pm

Best wishes and thank you for all your support and please forward this message to anyone I may have forgot.

    From his facebook:

This is Erin - Paul is doing well and glad to be at Sharp Rehab. He wants to get the most out of his time here, and wants to spend as much time in physical therapy as possible. Therefore, he would like to limit visits to 5-8pm. This should come as no surprise to anyone who knows Paul. Thank you for your continued support and prayers.

That kind of determination and spirit are a very good sign! Proud of him for tackling this like a professional, I can only hope it is in me to do the same were the roles reversed. Best wishes for what is sure to be the best possible recovery from the injury. At some level even after a major injury or des ease and recovery we are all still masters of our own destiny.

Wow, sorry to hear this. Hope he's getting better. It makes me remember visiting my buddy in the hospital after his accident. He lay motionless on life support and we all wondered to what extent he would recover if at all. We all wondered saying we'd give anything to have Dave back, even if he was less than 100%. Yes, he'd have anger issues to work through I'm sure, but at least we could continue life with him. He never made it and the loss was tremendous. I'll say a prayer for Paul.
