OK, now been down to BMW as every supplier in my area has sold out, have bought part number 11 41 2 343 118 which is the oil filter, I have taken a picture which is here > http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/...0/P6098086.jpg and it now will not start, but the oil seems to be ok! Ah well, time to charge the battery and replace the regulator / rectifier!

    One thing after another......

was dry, slightly sunny/clouds but the wind was evil, blew me all over the place. But I got to the workshop (35miles nice twisties) and the peggysue is now running -

Haha, do you live in the same country as me???? It never seems to stop raining when I am off work - and it seems to be cracking the flags when I am working - no matter which part of the UK I am in!
You sure you're not the rain god?

did they sell out of all of them? or did you manage to get a.n.other?

    ESB Bolton - sold out
Kawasaki dealer Bolton - sold out
Rocket centre Blackburn - sold out
Moto Centre (Previous Aprilia dealer) - sold out
All motor spares dealers - sold out
Bitz for bikes - had one in stock on Thursday - sold out when I called today
All local bike breakers that stock oil filters - sold out

Spent two hours on the phone before biting the bullet and calling Williams BMW at Chester Road, Manchester. On arrival at BMW, they supplied coffee..... Not used to that from my local bike dealers!

ahh makes all the difference, I once called in at a Harley dealership, scruffy and with the bike loaded with camping/rally gear and a very sweet young lady brought me a coffee, it was most appreciated.

I guess it's not far in miles Bolton to chester road but I reckon you deserved it might be a good plan to get some 'stock'

ah this we had with mine last week after months of no-starty, and I can't remember what the magician - er mechanical mate did next, there were no more parts needed
    lemme think
    carbs cleaned out
    tank emptied
    fresh fuel added
new(used but working) fuel tap fitted
    tank drain unblocked
spark plug removed cleaned and replaced
    battery plugged in to optimate
oil fully drained, flushed, and re-filled and bled with new filter
coolant fully drained, new hoses, and refilled
and I still can't remember if there was something else - as I wasn't there the whole time
but I know the backfire has gone

OK, replacement resistor fitted, still struggling starting, but when started, runs for a few seconds, then stalls, then starts ok, runs for a minute or so, stalls again, then starts ok again and runs ok on choke for a couple of minutes, then I knock the choke off and it runs ok.

Any suggestions on where to go next?

    Cheers,

    Ste

Sure sounds like the fuel issue.....
    I would go about it....
Auxilary fuel supply to see if it's the tank/fuel valve-petcock.
2nd would be fuel entering the carbs....see filter at the T connector and if any leaks
3rd....carbs out for cleaning/inspection (I see you did clean and rebuilt, but.....)

I think the mixture is probably wrong..... I have the mixture screws out two turns from fully wound in, I am going to try it with an extra half turn on both of them - eg two and a half turns out...

    Screwdrivers out again....

In my opinion I don't think fuel/air mixture would cause this issue.... But than again....
I have both bikes @ 3.5 turns out and both are easy to start and hold idle well.

Sorted..... Mixture screws now 3.25 turns out from fully wound in, now it starts in seconds rather than minutes and runs a lot more smooth. What temperature does the fan usually kick in at? I left it running for a while the other day and only hit the kill switch when I realised the water was running down the path away from the bike!

    Cheers,

    Ste
