need assistance diagnosing starting issue

so this has been my routine to get my T up and running the last 3 days.

1. key on
2. open the idle lever half way
3. hit the starter
4. (bike makes a piffle and the the starter kicks out, but keeps spinning)
5. key off/key on
6. let go of starter, and hit it again
7. motor engine turns, but doesn't start.
8. bike is now flooded
9. key off
10. reach under tank and disconnect injector wires
11. key on
12. hit start
13. bike stumbles and comes to life a for a few seconds while it cleans out the cylinders
14. key off
15. reconnect injectors
16. key on
17. hit starter
18. bike comes to life.

what is causing the starter, sprag or whatever to disengage so early?

pieces of information

• the bike has been parking on my front porch and hooked up to a battery tender each night.
• the bike is parked in a garage near my office
• the bike has no problems starting at the end of the work day
• if the bike is parked out side for a short while, couple hours or so, i can come back and it will start just fine.
• i replaced the solenoid last year with one of the generics as recommended

list of maintenance items on my to due list in the next month (may or may not be related. that's why i'm asking)

• new air filter. was going to swap with a k&n i had left over from my futura only to realize the T's box is 10 mm shorter that the fut. so i put back in the gross stocker
• oil change
• *maybe* new plugs and wires. i changed the plugs middle of last year
• *maybe* new battery (it's at least 3 years old)

try starting it with no idle,[the idles only if its really cold]if it dont want to start,shut of,give it 5 minutes,try again and just whack the trottle open as u push the starter button[my neighbours loved that bit] my theory is if its kept inside over night then no need for idle,if that dosent work try swapping out the battery to see if that helps.if the batterys not it top form even with the charger then it wont help,if its flooded just give it 10 minutes before trying again.good luck

normally i would start with the idle left closed. ie in the garage at work. last year towards the end of fall when i first experienced this "syndrome" i would start with idle lever closed. and the starter would still disengage early, the starter motor would spin, and injectors would dump fuel like they do now.

I have let the bike sit as long as 24 hours before trying to start again, and even the, i still wind up having to disconnect my injectors.

I will try starting with a new battery in the next couple weeks to see if that cures it.

If the starter motor is spinning but not turning the engine then the sprag clutch is failing.

is there a how to floating around on how to replace the sprag clutch? also i keep seeing some references to the sprag or sprag clutch from other bikes working. is there a definitive list on what bikes are cross compatible?
