    Defective tire/ what to do?

I had a shop order a tire for me and I had it installed today. First I want to say they are a really top notch bunch of guys and their prices are very reasonable. I used to order my own tires and install them but, while I could still save some money doing it that way, their prices are so good that I wouldn't save a huge amount and I like to support guys like that. I hope they will be around when I really need them. Its a fun place to hang out, they have an open shop, they don't mind you being right being around while they are working and the owner knows more about engines both motorcycle and automobile than anybody I've ever met. You just can't stump him on any engine related topic. He almost always takes time to converse and never seems to be in a rush. Great guy.

So, I ride about 60 miles to the shop to get the tire installed. I had a plan to get there about 11am and be back on the road by about noon for a day of riding with my buddy that lives near there. Was supposed to be a great day, sunny and highs in the upper 50's.

I'm so glad I bought the tire from them. I would have felt really bad if I had brought it with me. Here's why, after trying to mount the tire for a very long time and having no luck getting it to seat in just one spot, we pulled it off the rim and right where it won't seat is a protrusion or bump of excess rubber on the lip of the bead. Immediately, they offered to order another tire but, we all agreed that was a defect that wouldn't affect safety and trimmed it off. The tire seated after trimming. I mean I was 60 miles from home and it was going on 3pm. The day of riding down the drain.

Here's my question, should I get a replacement tire? Should the manufacturer replace it? The tire was subjected to excessive pressure in the attempt to seat the bead. Could that damage the carcass? I rode the 60 miles home with no issues but, along the way, I was thinking, maybe this tire should be replaced just to be safe.

What would I do? Change it. The tires are too important to take a chance on. Even if it doesn't unseat itself it would always be a nagging concern which would be a distraction from enjoying a ride.

Even though it's probably fine, it won't cost anyone to just swap out the tire.

Anybody have any input on whether over inflating to get the bead to seat will damage the carcass?

I should probably be asking the manufacturer instead of the forum but, there are some very experienced individuals on here and I want to have my BS meter calibrated before talking to them on Monday, just in case they try to feed me a line. I am leaning towards replacing the tire but, I don't think I should have to pay for it and I don't think the shop should either. I probably should have taken the offer to replace the tire but , the inconvenience swayed me.

I really think the manufacturer should step up and handle the the situation. We'll see what happens.

It depends on the amount of overinflation. Consider too that the rims also have max pressure limits that have to be adheared to or their structural integrity can be compromised. In trucking people will put a 16 ply tire on a rim designed for 10 ply, inflate them to 120 psi that the tire is rated for instead of the rims max of 65 psi and then later on have a rim failure.

Personally I would not trust a tire that had a grape on the bead as the whole tire could have been compromised by the pressure loss and potentially unequal pressure during the moulding process. Did the cords or belts shift when that occured? I don't know of any way of telling for sure without cutting the tire open.

The tire should have not been mounted and should have been returned to its maker so they could check the rest of the tires in the prodution run it came from for other defects.

Have it replaced. Tires are not something i would want tobe having second thoughts about.

I just had an unrelated tire incident as well. The Dealer i buy from is also awesome, and very friendly. Family owned business and i like to give them as much business as possible. I bought my first bike from them and salesman still remembers me 6 years later and comes to say hi everytime i come in. I bought new Dunlop Q2's, put about 45 miles on them and had 2 patches rip off the carcass, about 2"x4"....no i am not joking. Brought it back to the dealer i bought them from and had the Dunlop Rep have them sent down to be X-Rayed, which showed a defect from the manufacturer. Dunlop replaced them at no cost, win win situation for me and the dealer. Tire companies are usually pretty good about replacement.

I would not have trimmed the tire in the first place, most likely would have put the old tire back on or put one on that they had in stock. You may have an issue getting a refund from the manufacturer now, as the tire has now been modified

Yep. The decision to alter the tire will make it impossible to warranty. If the guy warranties it for you he will likely eat it himself.
Did he suggest cutting it or did you?
In all likely hood if there was just a nub that was causing it to leak and was trimmed neatly, it will be just fine.
    What brand of tire?
