    BV 250, battery & GPS

    Got another newbie question here:

Would I drain the BV 250's battery if I left my GPS plugged in to the cigarette lighter overnight? I know the BV 250 does provide electricity to the cigarette lighter even with the ignition in the off and locked position. I only don't know if having a GPS charging overnight will drain the BV's battery. Thanks!

Not a good Idea to leave anything on a 10-12 series battery Unless connected to tender at same time My Beo S500 Lighter is disabled on bike shutdown will not be live until engine start That circuit costs money Maybe saved as a luxury coveience item ? who knows Look at your GPS adapter good to like 4 Amps its a small lcd Tv

I have done that occasionally on my Sport City but not intentionally when pulling into the garage to hear the phone ringing or having a problem with the dogs evident and in the rush forgot to go back to the bike and disconnect the GPS.

I have a 4.3 inch Nuvi 265WT with FM reciever for traffic alerts and Bluetooth which will run for 4 hours on the built in 1 amp battery. If you leave it attached to the bike overnight to charge it up with the screen turned off you will probably use a bit over 1 amp from your bikes battery to charge it. If you leave it on you would be consuming about 1/4 amp per hour or less if your GPS has the smaller screen, no FM for traffic alerts and no Bluetooth or 2 to 2 1/2 amps in an 8 to 10 hour time frame.

On my Sport City 250 with a 10 AmpHr battery the Nuvi 265WT could potentially drain the battery completely if left plugged in while turned on with the engine turned off in 40 hours however after 25 to 30 hours you may not be able to start the bike.

Ah, sorry for the late reply. I've been having major computer problems and am finally back online.

Thanks for the info. I have a 4.5" Nüvi 255w. It doesn't have Bluetooth and doesn't receive any traffic updates. The only reason I'd consider putting the GPS plugged in overnight (not turned on though, but turned off and charging) is say I'm taking a trip somewhere and can't access an outlet overnight. Also, there might be occasions when I may leave the GPS charging under the saddle for 6 hours when I'm on a trip. I imagine the BV 250's battery would be okay with that, right?

It should be OK as long as you have not added higher wattage headlamps etc so that you charging system can't completely recover the battery from the last start before the next stop. I have my Nuvi plugged in while I am riding so I just turn it off and stow it under the seat when I am stopped. Traffic alerts and such do not work when it is not plugged in as the power cord is the antenna that receives the alert signals. I run the power cord down under the bottom of the glove box door and close it over the cord and use a bungie to keep it from pulling on the Nuvi.
