OK, here are the pics of my test ride with my modified trailer with the bike on it.

The trip was done in 2 parts. A short haul trip (about 20 minutes), and then if all looked good and securre, a long haul trip (about 90 minutes). For the first trip, I stopped several times to check the tie-downs, anchors and the wheel hubs (brought my infrared thermometer). All straps and anchors were great and tight. Temp readings on one of the hubs had me look at the tire pressure and sure enough, it was low, like half the other sides tire!!

Here is the ramp I made... 2X10X70 pressure treated board.

Here is a view of the front angle iron that I had to grind away a bit of to protect the bikes nose. I also added some pipe insulation for added protection... For the actual trip, the pipe insulation will be tapped down.

Absolutely awesome! I don't think I've ever seen a better, purpose-built trailer. You're gonna have to paint 'Tempus Fugit' on the side! (along with Colorado or bust!)

    Thanks!!

The trailer actually started out very different when I purchased it. But I needed to "tweak" it a bit to be used as a Toy Hauler. My goal was to convert it so that I could switch between a Toy Hauler and regular trailer. The top comes off fairly easy even for one person.

I still have to paint it, but I need nicer weather in order to finish it. The other goal is to rig the Wheel Chalk to be removable far easier then it is right now. Currently it's hard-mounted. I want to work it so the all that I have to do is remove some pins and then the unit can come out. Much like my loading ramp. I have the front hatch rigged with Flag Hinges to make removable as simple as opening the door and lifting it off.

I'm also thinking about adding forward storage bins that will be accessible from a securable top hatch. That would mean storing the ramp under the trailer. Not a big deal, just a bit more time consuming. I'll look at tackling that project after I get back.

There are a couple of other "Upgrades" I want to look at too. Including stronger tires (current tires are 2 ply sidewall and rated to a max load or 500lbs), beefier axle, hubs and leaf springs. The whole trailer as it currently sits, can handle a load of up to 500lbs (perhaps a bit more for shorter runs) and I'd like to get it to 1,000lbs capacity. That way I can rig it to carry 2 bikes safely!!

i'll put money on you'll wish you had remounted the front wheel chock up onto a piece of 2x before you get there.

no ill wished, Murphy stay home, but it could still pass impact and movement the way it is.

Hummm.... Well, the front of the wheel chalk is mounted directly to the front framing beam. The roads I took her over (some of the worst Winnipeg has and the newest) and she was rock solid.

Plus, adding anything under the chalk would raise the over all height necessitating a total change in how it's mounted. It would have to be moved back at last 3" to 4" leaving me with no room out back for the gate. Unless you were refering to the underside...

And just to be sure/safe, I'll be making regular stops and have a bit of a checklist of things to look for/check to insure a safe trip...

how many Tie downs do you have in total? 6? front wheel, rear wheel, left handle bar, right handlebar, and 2 around the middle?

At this point I've got 4, and with that, I used one tie-down strap for each side of the handle bar, one for the rear tire and one on the diagonal (right front anchor to left rear anchor) that went across the seat. I have 2 more tieown straps and may use them. I also have 2 more tie-down anchors that I could install at the mid point between the 4 I have currently installed. however, based on my trial run, I don't thnk I'll need it. The rear tie-down actually pulls the bike back as it it jut situated behind the rear tire.

ahh ok that makes more sense. I thought I saw 2 going over the tunnel.. after looking again you just lay them over it.

Correct... I picked up tie-down ratchets that were 20' in length... as a result, i have REALLY long tails, so I used them across the tunnel and tied them into the anchors just to add a bit...

I'm using 15' X 1" ratcheting straps... think you will run into problems if you go with wider one. The one of the sets I got came from Princess Auto when it was on sale. HERE is the first set I picked up... I also picked up THIS set of 6' X 1" set of 2 yesterday, I got it on sale for $9.99 (regular $19.99) but in camo colour...

Oo I like.. I am just getting the floor for the trailer cut to size right now. then some C Channel tubing will hold it in place once on the flat deck.
