-I have replaced the brown connectors.
-I have replaced the voltage regulator with the aftermarket unit AF1 sells (pre-mosfet mod).
-I have not replaced the starter relay (although I know I probably should).
-I have checked that my bike is charging the battery properly, which it is, and the battery is not flat.
-I have replaced the battery since owning the 2006 capo.

At present, when I hit the start button with my thumb, it usually responds right away with one crank of the motor and then stops cranking for a fraction of a second and then it starts it right up after the dreaded "pause". Has anyone else had this issue and what did you do to get rid of it? It has been this way for some time and it continues to fail to instill a huge amount of confidence. Thanks in advance for your input.
Use a wrench and just short the two terminals on the starter relay.
If it cranks better now it is the starter relay.

Check also the connection on the starter itself.
If you see corrosion it needs to be cleaned.
If the nut on the terminal is severly corroded make sure the terminal itself can not turn or you will kill the starter motor.

I've replaced the battery and the relay on mine, but plan to check the starter connections, as well. How accessible is the the starter, as far as what has to come off to get to it? I know it's on the front of the engine on the right side, but is this a 5 minute operation, or something akin to a KTM oil change?

Relay ordered. Thanks for all of the tips. Cleaned starter connection as well. Hopefully the relay gets here quickly…….Deefred thanks for reminding me not to mangle my starter trying to service it. I've done this removing bad starters before on car motors, but would hate to do it to a working starter motor. Especially to one as inevitably expensive as the Italian version!!!

Mine very suddenly developed sluggish starting a couple of years ago, but would still start. So put in extra earth straps - starter motor bolt to engine earth and engine to battery (no improvement).
Then disconnected connections on solenoid. All very clean and dry, but very suprised to find corrosion on hot terminal post - as have others.
Unfortunately, fitted new solenoid (which I had available) without checking if by cleaning the corrosion it had cured the problem (sorry). Now OK.

Installed new yamaha starter relay, very easy job. Original problem is solved. Absolutely amazing what a difference that made. Although I'm not an expert on motorcycle electronics, I feel comfortable saying they should have invested another dollar or two and gone with a higher quality part from the get-go. Anyhow, thank you all for the advice and I can now guarantee I have put the wrench to my capo for the very last time this YEAR!!! Happy new year to you all.
