Hello all.
Recently purchased a 2000 Mille R and one of the first things I did, after basic maintenance, was install the SPY 5000m alarm. Couldn't for the life of me find a "how to" or anything pertaining to install for the Mille specifically so here it goes.
I will keep this very basic so anyone can do this as quickly as possible, thus there won't be a lengthy explanation for each step and I will use simple terms.
1. You will have 8 wires on the SPY harness. (Not the wires connected to the brain/box; I'll get to that later). The wires are as follows
Brown: wire that that feeds 12V into the accessory wires to allow the bike to remote start (further explanation to follow)
Red: Power wire to power the brain and alarm system. Also supplies power from the battery to the brain to the brown wire.
Black: Ground Wire
Pink: Wire that allows for the ignition to disable
Grey: Also wire that allows for ignition disable
Blue: Ignition line that tells the starter relay to engage the starter
Yellow Lines (2): makes blinkers flash (right side and left side)
2. Now you will have to figure out where on the bike all these lines go or I can just tell you.
I mounted the brain on top of the battery (zip tie) which allows for most of the lines to be attached.
First start with the blinker lights. The two yellow lines will go to the rear of the bike. Locate the two blinker plugs on the bike. Right will have Red/Blue wires. Left will have Blue/Light Blue wires.
One yellow wire will to to the red, right side, and the other yellow will go to the Light Blue wire on the left side.
Next, connect the red wire to the battery and then attach the brain box ground to the negative terminal. You can now arm/disarm the bike and check to see that the blinkers work when doing so. Also to provide extra ground also attached the black wire on the alarm harness to another ground on the bike. I recommend any of the bolts that hold the black bracket down in front of the battery. There are 4 bolts to choose from.
The blue wire from the brain goes to one of the red/yellow wires (you pick doesn't matter which one) right before the starter relay. There will be a plug right before the relay. Attached the blue wire before the plug where the two red/yellow wires are. The starter relay sits directly behind the battery and is black. It also has a large wire going directly to the battery. The blue wire tells the starter relay to engage power to the starter on remote start.
Ok, only 3 wires on the alarm harness to go (Brown, Pink & Grey)
A little explanation is needed so you know what you are doing to the bike. Within the ignition key switch there is a constant 12V wire that has power to it all the time, even when there is no key in the ignition. When the operator of the bike places the key in the ignition and turns it to the accessory position, effectively what is happening is that the live 12V line transfers power to the all the accessories (lights/horn/starter relay etc) so the bike can go into operation. Consequently, the alarm has to perform all these functions when you are away from the bike for remote start.
Ok, the last 3 wires attach where a white plug is located under the rubber wire protective cup on the right side of the bike in front of the front brake handle at the front of the bike. You will have to remove the front fairing (head light/windshield fairing assembly held on with 8 bolts) to access this freely.
The first line, mine was orange, is the 12V line and nothing from the alarm attaches to this. The second line is green/red (on my harness) but after the plug it turns into Light Blue/Blue. This is the wire (Light Blue/Blue) you will have to cut at least 3-4 inches from the plug. On the cut end toward the plug attached the pink wire. On the other side of the cut attach the grey wire. Now they alarm can disable the the bike when the alarm sounds or kill the ignition from the remote.
Last line is the brown which will have to be attached to the rest of the lines, which are your accessory lines. Remember only attach the brown wire to the remaining wires, NOT THE 12V WIRE or the WIRE YOU JUST CUT. Just attach it to the to remaining 2 wires before the plug. Mine were the grey/yellow wire and the solid yellow wire)
You're done.
Notes:
You will have to use additional wiring when routing the three wires to the front of the bike as the alarm wiring harness is not long enough.
If you have figured out a better way to install this damn alarm please contribute. I am not saying this is the best way but it was the cleanest to me and made the most sense.
Also the alarm remote can kill the ignition during normal operation of the engine so keep it in a safe place so you don't accidentally hit the button while riding the bike and the engine dies.
Most will be happy to know that the remote start will not work unless the bike is in neutral. I only say this if you install the alarm like I did as I did not bypass the neutral sensor.
Also this install should apply to the 1998-2003 bikes but I make no guarantees.
Hope this helps some people. Sorry I don't have pictures but I finished the install before deciding to post a how to. Just thought I would try contribute something on my first post.
Happy riding.
Nick
