Over governed, over regulated and over taxed - thats Oz in a nutshell right now. The Government knows how much money it can raise with fines and keeps hiking them up. Some of them are simply outrageous - get done for unregistered, uninsured motor vehicle and unlicensed all at the same time and you're up for $1300!! Who can afford that? Speeding less than 10 kays over the limit will set you back $300ish.
The main problem is that driving skills are so appallingly bad in Australia they set the speed limits etc to suit the fuckwits who can't see past their nose. Riding around in traffic, watch how many idiots are staring fixedly at their speedo's - not the road. No -one wants to get pinged for speeding - fuck the rest of the world around their car!

Its not right, I don't agree with it - but we can't stop it. Its the price we pay for being apathetic and having a standard of driving that rivals a third world country. And while we have one of the best public health schemes in the world which the government continues to fund, they'll continue to slug us shit loads of money to pay for it all. Each fatal or serious injury accident costs a fortune - my crash this year (4 days in hospital) cost about $20,000. They sent me the bill to sign and send back - gotta love bureacracy! I think in some country's like the US, if you don't have private cover, you're fucked.

We've got it good here in some ways and in other ways it sucks. Do what I do - find roads no-one knows about and ride them mid week!

Hey swannie, there's no freedom of speech in this country - never has been, and both major political parties have refused to a support legislation for a bill of citizens rights' in very recent years.

Got pulled over twice yesterday, 1st time unmarked Toyota corolla(lights behind the grille) checked my pipes with a sound meter (how it's possible to get an accurate reading at the side of a main road with semi's going past is beyond me)
Second time was an unmarked VW Golf gti, got a ticket for my illegal rear fender, I will be fighting that one as it is the stock item.
Saw at least 5 other unmarked cars, and not one marked car all day.

Went for a ride around the Yarra Ranges with a group of six rider on Saturday. First we got stopped at the bottom of Reefton Spur by two bike cops. They quickly went over our bikes gave us all licence and rego checks and then warned us about a camouflaged speed trap up the top of the spur.

Got into Marysville without any more hassles then on the way down the Black Spur we were stopped again by the same two cops. They recognised the bikes and said that we were ok as they'd already checked us out.

Then further down the Black Spur there was a huge police blockade. both sides of the road, stopping every bike that came down. This time they gave us all RBT's and then proceeded to go over every bike wit a fine toothed comb.
Five out of our group of six were given defect notices for F/E's (me included).
No fines were issued and there was no checks for de-cat pipes either visually or mechanically.

In the end we probably got off fairly lightly, even though buy the time they were processing us a lot of bikes cruised passed without being stopped because
by that time it was 4pm and it was knock off time for the busy policemen.

It was a huge contingent of cops, maybe 15 or 20 of them in marked and un-marked HWP cars and also marked and un-marked BMW1300's. I wonder how many people got raped, murdered, bashed, and/or burgled in the time they were there from 9am-4pm. Great to see the Victorian police force keeping us
    all safe.

Shit mate, that sort attention is insane. Whereabouts was all this law enforcement taking place? I need to know where to avoid on my regular runs into the once-great state of QLD.

Have come across a gti vw a few times around numinbah valley, he was doing laps through the twisties and when bikes came near him he would slow down and tempt the riders to overtake on double lines then pull them up for it, he had a camera recording as well.

You can help to stop it by taking it to court. It's said if 10% of tickets were contested it court, it would clog up the system.

No need for a solicitor, just turn up with a bit of research and go for it. Good fun cross examining the cop, I've gone to court 3 times now and won each time. The last was the infamous fender eliminator.

    Well done.
I have a mate who has done that a couple times.
Can you give any info on what you did to beat the fines

im sorry but i don't see how a mud guard is a compliance issue. WTF?!?!?!

The only requirement should be that the number plate is within X distance from the rear of the bike and between 90 and 75 degrees of angle to the road surface (so the plate can be seen).
They should be picking on people who are using the twisties as personal race tracks. I'm all for a bit of a blast and potentially don't always go as slow as what i could, but sometimes people need a bit of a scare to slow down. They should subsidize trackdays for road registered bikes so it encourages riders to go to a safe location for a blast and keep the fatalities down.

Yep, I would hav been one of those that got pinched by this little gathering. Decfect notice for 'mudguard', no reflector and idicators not being 180mm apart. No fine but have to get it rwc. I was surprised they didnt question the pipe. The motocycle cop ignored it I think, but his car based fellow was screwing his nose up at it.

I must admit the cop was pretty good, and he didnt give me a hard time, although the fact that my Scadinavian girlfriend who had been on the back was doing a lot of chatting to him probably helped the matter
