Area 51 / general running/ fuel? problem help please.

Hi, I have an older (99 reg) water cooled 2 stroke Aprillia Area 51 50cc scooter that I am working on.

I got it two years ago for pocket money, as the main bearings were going.
I had the engine rebuilt just before last winter, including a complete new bottom & top end & a carb clean out /rebuild.

I didn't run it at all after the rebuild (apart from once up the road to check it worked fine), I just stored the scooter under cover until about a month ago.

It would not start at all, so suspecting stale fuel, etc, I:

    - Drained & flushed the tank & fuel lines
    - Replaced the air filter
    - Replaced the fuel filter
    - Replaced the battery
    - Replaced the spark plug
    - Pulled the carb & cleaned it out
    - Replaced some split / leaking fuel lines that came to light refitting the carb.

It then started & ran fine, but now it is colder & needs the manual choke to start, I have a problem where the scooter starts first time on button or kick & ticks over fine... however, while the manual choke is on, even slightly, the engine dies if you attempt to ride it away. This is a right pain, as it means running the scooter on full choke for 20 minutes before riding away (if left to idle) or 10 minutes of loud revving every time I want to use it, making me popular with the neighbors!

As soon as you can put the choke fully off, it pulls away & rides just fine.

The other symptom is that when you stop the engine, petrol runs out of the drain tube at the bottom of the carb for a short while .... about the amount you would imagine is in the carb when fuel pump has stopped running.

I suspect a carb fault, but would welcome any ideas from the more experienced as to what to look for.

    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

sounds like the stale fuel in the carb has affected the float needle. strip and clean the carb again. mine did the same. although mine was also missing the drain plug out the bottom of the float bowl. if it still does this, put a small length of pipe on the overflow and block it with a small bolt to see if this cures the problem
