Could be purchasing a 08/09 Peg Factory

Hello, I'm currently looking at purchasing an Adventurer Tourer, so far on my list I have the Tiger 800, Vstrom 650 and literally found the Pegaso 650 yesterday as I was researching. I've found a decently priced Factory '08/'09 model with around 400k's on the clock (which is quite odd for the age), what should I be looking out for when purchasing?

So far I've only noticed that the 1st gear is strange, the bike tends to jolt slightly when accelerating, I also noticed this on a '06(?) model which I rode before it, guy at shop said that usually as soon as you release the clutch at take off, you get ready to quickly shift into 2nd as the 1st gear is lousy. I did notice and only later realised that the rev limiter kicked in around 5500 due to the bike not run it yet (oops).

Buffeting wise I thought the Peg was the best compared to the other 2.
I really enjoyed the bike and it didn't feel top heavy (I'm coming from an XR250 and now test rode all 3).

Only thing that really peeved me off was that I kept turning on the high beams, the switch sticks out too much.

As long as you know the Peg factory is not an adventure tourer bike you will enjoy it.
although what i wrote above i do tour on my Peg allot and even manged to do 1200km in 12-13 hours, i did modify a bit the bike to be more on the tour side like seat, side racks and front screen.
The peg factory will shine in the curves with bad pavement leaving all the short suspension sport bikes behind, but as soon as the road will be straight they will leave you behind, my fastest bike was a modified ZZR1100 that output more than 150 HP and i can tell you that the peg is more fun and handles much better.

As for the rev limiter it is always on 7100 +- RPM what you saw is the gear shift indicator that is blinking on the dash.

Brilliant bike. Had one for two years. It's 'only' got 47bhp but loads of fun and very capable bike. Now replaced mine with a Tiger 800 but I do miss the handling of the Factory Peg. Sometimes wish I still had it (alongside the Tiger that is).

The great thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise and is not preceded by bouts of worry and depression

So the Trail would be more of the Adventurer Tourer and the Factory a super motard? I don't want to do jumps, just perhaps do the occasional short cut on a dirt track somewhere, so perhaps just having some chunkier tyres with do? No knobbies but say something similar to the Michelin Siracs I had on my XR.

With the ! flashing, the bike didn't want to go any harder, it didn't want to pass 5500rpm.

Well the Vstrom has 67HP, I was quite content with the XR250's measly 19HP, but I guess that if I want to tour somewhere, I need the HP for my gear.

So any thoughts about the 1st gear? and did you guys have issues with the blue high beam light switch next to the clutch lever?

Yes the trail is more fitted to light offroad, the Factory can be fitted with the Avon distanzia tires that will work on dry trails but the 19" wheel of the Pegaso trail will give you more confidence when offroading.

If the bike didn't go above 5500 RPM there is something wrong with it or it have some kind of restriction due to your country regulations, i bought my Factory new in 2007 and the Rev limiter was always above 7000 RPM you can also feel it very abrupt when hitting the limiter.

Bigger wheels are only good for ruts and jumps etc no? If I'm going just on a gravel road then it should be ok yeah? To change a factory to a trail wheel wise, I guess you have to muck around with the brakes which I think is different in size, also it seems rims are damn expensive.

These bikes are approved for Learners which means it's probably governed.

Bigger wheel will give more directional stability on gravel road, with the 17" wheel you can go probably with the same pace like with 19" but it will require from you more experience.

The Factory have enough suspension travel for gravel roads.
I am guessing that with the Avon distanzia, Dunlop Mutant or Perelli MT60 (all have the right size for the factory) you can do frequent gravel riding
you can do with the original tires also but these 100% road tires tend to get cuts on gravel.

Hrmm what do do, $10000~AUD for a 08/09 Factory with 400k's on the ODO or $8000~AUD for a 09 Trail with 8000k's.

It's interesting how no one has mentioned the 1st gear, it must be normal. Shame you can't up the HP a little more.

Didnt see any problem with first gear, it is more or less like other bikes ive had.
regarding the HP you stated that you had a restricted peg that could not go over 5500 RPM so try the open version
there is a lot of mods to the 660 Yamaha/Minerelli motor, if you go to extremes you can reach up to 70 HP but it will cost you.

For most Aussie roads, the Trail will be the better bike. The larger front wheel will tack much better in the soft stuff. I have a friend who fitted dual purpose tyres to his Yam XT660X, but the 17 inch front didn't work well in gravel. He sold it and got a KLR 650.

I've not heard of issues with first gear. Its a bit too high for serious off-road use.

The biggest limitation of this bike is the fueling, which you soon read about in this forum. I've ridden 78,000km on my bike and still happy.

I found that it was better to short shift from 1st to 2nd and then go for it through the rest of the gears. Must say though that it would run out of breath at about 110mph ish. I toured the Scottish Highlands twice on mine. It never missed a beat. Would also cruise on motorways at 75 - 80 mph loaded with luggage.

    There's not much of a second hand market here, I guess I have to decide in getting the;

$10500~AUD for a 08/09 Factory with 400k's on the ODO and perhaps getting more chunkier tyres or purchasing rims as well which might bump up the cost in total to $12ish
Just got an update, sales guy said that this was a demo bike..and that the ! at 5500 flashing meant that it's a fail safe when running in the engine.. I need to find the manual to find out on what it means officially.

Buying a new 2010 Trail for $12 (Budget at the moment is $10).

    Or $8000~AUD for a 09 Trail with 8000k's.
    *Correction, bike has done 10000k's.

Thanks for the info but I don't want to risk being stuck in the middle of nowhere with a dodgy fuel pump or dry solder joint on the ignition or...

Have to listen to the brain over the heart this time and wait for the vstrom 650 '12.
