Wear the plugs. I'm in my roaring 60's and suffer from tinnitus and hearing loss. What caused the condition?

    1) mortars & machine guns?
    2) loud, and I mean loud dragsters?
    3) jet engines?
    4) motorcycles?

I find this thread very interesting. I've never used ear plugs but do suffer from tinitus which I assume is from music/ concerts from my younger days. A mate listens to his ipod while riding which I am uneasy about as I like to hear whats going on around me. Reading the above posts I think I'll try ear plugs as I never considered wind noise especially as I wear a flip top lid due to wearing glasses. I'm doing a 300 mile ride on my lambretta this saturday so I'll try some out.

i never have worn ear plugs on bikes, but as this guy said, it's probably all the other stuff that damaged it worse. been shooting guns since age 5, tons of rock concerts, playing guitar at high volume, too many loud bars, cars, machinery in the shop, you name it. fortunately i was able to tune out the bipolar ex.

over a decade on the HD w/ no helmet or plugs, that wind over the ears seemed to do worse than anything. i followed a truck real close coming home at 2 am one morning for a couple hours, and after putting the kickstand down, literally fell over as the wind had screwed up my ear/balance.

these days i do use the earinc.com custom molded ones (recommended by norcomille). I went to a gun show, had them molded, and they showed up a week or two later. I saved the molded clay material, and used them for plugs at the gun range last week. pretty nice.

After this thread and talking to some guys at my dealership I decided I should look for some plugs. I got myself a pair of Silent Ear plugs to try out. Should be in soon. I'll definitely report on my findings.

I want to get custom molded ones, but around these parts it's pretty dang expensive ($350) but I guess I shouldn't put a price on my long term hearing....

I got those Silent Ear plugs in. They might actually be too strong, lol. The loudest thing on my ride of about an hour was my tinnitus. I could still hear traffic and wind, but not a whole lot. It changed the feel of the ride because I wasn't always able to tell how high I was revving. It'll definitely take some getting used to.

Hey Jeff - check your local bike show - the ones in Toronto always have custom ear plug makers doing them for about $70 - these are great. They also make them with ear buds is you want tunes in the helmet
They take some getting used to but now I ride with them almost all the time.... unless I feel the need to hear the DD sing
