Might be detonation, maybe oil starvation, maybe a bit of the gear box broke off and has been grinding around the motor? (Lots of metal in the oil)

The mechanics said they dont know what caused it. Just that there are many possible causes and damage all over the place.

I'm not a certified Aprilia Mechanic like they are so dont always understand the lingo. But the technical term they used was.. "The motor is totally fucked!".

Can someone explain that in simple English?

And here is the sump plug... Obviously not alloy either as it is magnetized and sticking to the plug.

One of the bits on my finger gives an idea of their size.

Imagine how much metal was in the filter and oil!

And no... I dont know where it came from!
Well, whatever happened to it I hate it for you man! Determining the root cause of an engine failure can be extremely difficult. Add a gearbox to the same lubrication system and I can completely understand how the cause can be unknown. Still under warranty I hope?

Hey ErinC The Engine Whisperer....how about you school me on detonation? Maybe the rest will make sense.
To keep it short. It is when peak cylinder pressure happens to close to TDC(top dead center) forcing the rod straight down on the crankshaft, thus beating the bearing. It will also rattle the piston in the cylinder, which is sometimes audible. Typically peak cylinder pressure should occur around 15-17* ATDC(after top dead center) in order for the rod to have leverage against the crankshaft and force it downward.

What happened leading up to the detonation, give it give you any warning signs was it running rough or just when you changed the oil and found the metal bits did you decided to get it properly checked.

Scotty, if it's any conciliation, a TV4 did what looks to be the exact same thing over here a couple of months ago. No warning signs - just went BANG!

Don't think they ever did figured out the real cause.

Perhaps there are other examples out there... and some answers?

Just wanted to say hi from Wisconsin. The snow in the background is almost gone, I cant wait! The new Tuono has a whole 1/2 mile on it, mostly in the driveway! Quick question. I would like to put the SW-Motech blaze panniers on it, they don't have a application for it. I believe I cant make another application work with some miner modification. Does anyone happen to know the measurement for the bolt spread on the pillion foot pegs of the BMW S1000 RR? I think I can Make that application work. Thanks.

I have a S1000, exactly what measurement do you need?

The panniers mount with a bracket that bolts to the mounting point of the pillion foot rest, where the foot rests bolt to the rear sub frame. The width from center to center of the mounting bolts.

Mine didnt go BANG. It gradually began to sound noisier while I was on a week long tour on the bike. I wasnt even sure if it had got louder or if it was my imagination. Some of the guys thought it was noisier, some said it was the same. Some thought cam chain rattle... etc. So when home I dropped the oil to see if maybe that would help. Thats when I found the fragments. She wasnt using oil though as 4 Ltrs came out. Once I took it to the dealer and compared it to a V4 they had there it was apparent she was very clunky.

The detonation explanation and piston rattle sounds like a plausible explanation... however I dont think it explains all the metal I found

Hey Silky, why are you having the dog bones replaced?

And what happened that required cogs in the gear box to be replaced?

They took my gearbox out but didnt actually take it fully apart. It doesnt look like there is any obvious damage to it when you spin the cogs, but it's hard to tell when it is still together.

My opinion is the chunks of metal came from the gears, but cant prove it yet. So if Silky has had gear issues then that will help to encourage them to take my gears apart.

    Cheers

hey scott , sorry to hear your having such a bummer mate
i say dog bones i mean selector forks , 1 was bent and 1 was worn , not sure on the official exact diagnosis of the cogs i will ask when i pick the t up photos have been taken and sent to the folks at aprilia
what was happening ,was that a false neutral came when changing up from 4-5 ,so having experiance of fulse neutrals leading to fooked gearboxes on my 10r , i gave the dealer a bell and he's had a look and its pretty much what happened to my 10r only i ignored the 10r for a bit to long
