    Duc 888, what's it worth?

So I've been lookin around on ebay and CL for a clean 888 for sometime now. I came across a nice example last week, bid on it, but was outbid. It didn't meet the seller's reserve price so I contacted him. Reserve was $8k, I bid 7k. The bike was a bit rough for what I wanted to do with it, but I know these bikes are hard to find. Tank had a minor ding and bottom of the fairings had some paint chips from rocks. Bottom of bike also had some black rubberized coating to prevent further damage. Kind of took away from the appeal of the bike.

So here's my dilemma....I want a pristine 888 to put in my living room and take out for a spin once in awhile. For the most part, looks are more important than function. Heck if I could find a 888 that's in great shape but didn't run, I'd probably take that.

What do you guys think 888 bikes are worth?

Great bikes the 851/888 series. I have a '91 851 Strada and paid too much for it at around 7k a few years ago but it had a few bells and whistles on it. A good owner experience though.

If looks are important, the 851 and 888 are almost identical. 851's are more common and therefore usually less expensive. Say in the 5k to 6k range for some that I have seen. 888's on the other hand are less common and I've seen some as much as 15k. Here's an example that I have seen on person:

A nice example to be sure but high at 15k IMO.

If you really have a hankering for one of these and want more info, try this forum:

The guys there have been very helpful and know a lot about these bikes.

To keep you entertained, I've stuck on a photo of mine.

Didn't look too bad at all. Looks like it was taken care of.....but i do agree the truckbed liner does kind of turn me off.

Yep that's the one. He relisted it after nobody met his reserve price. After sleeping on it I decided that I would pass on this one. I may regret this in 10 years but that's life.

I had seen a few 851 models but just didn't care fore the white frame. Almost every 851 I've seen has a white frame. I know there are some with gunmetal colored frames, but the price is always higher than I think its worth.

Thanks for all the input guys.

there's been an 851 SPO for sale in my local paper for the past year-plus (they offered a deal where you paid one price and the ad runs until its sold). if you have any interest i can forward the contact info and details to you (can't recall them, but it seemed like a decent deal to me).

For whatever it's worth I used to own an brand new, chipped /Termignioni etc 851 back in the day. It couldn't hold a candle to an RSV. Rode like a truck, suspension that didn't work under 80mph, quick to overheat in traffic, steered terrible if the front was few psi low.

For showpieces to be ridden occasionally I'd go for 70s vintage 900 ss and the like.
