fitting a Givi topbox on a 500ie luggage rack

I used an acrylic plate, 1in thick.
First - drill four holes into the black Aprilia luggage cover aligned with the holes found in the rack.
Second - cut a piece of acrylic in the shape of that cover. Drill four holes aligned with the Aprilia rack holes. Make sure to countersink the nuts at the top of the acrylic plate. I used s/s hex bolts inserted upside down in the Aprilia rack with 2 s/s washers. They come up through the acrylic plate and I used s/s locking nuts (nylon insert) with s/s washer. It's countersunk and flush with the top of the plate so the Givi rack can be flush on top of that plate.
Third - drill four holes aligned with the Givi rack. The screws will go up and not down since the Givi rack goes on top of the acrylic plate. Make sure to countersink the holes so the conical heads of the screws at bottom of plate are flush. I used epoxy to keep them in place, just fill the holes with it, and push the screws gently in and the excess epoxy comes out the other side, and it sets in minutes.
Fourth - fasten the acrylic plate to the Aprilia rack with s/s hex bolts as described in second, place the Givi rack on top of the plate and fasten to plate screws with s/s bolts
I used a clear acrylic at first but I found out it was too thin so I got a 1in thick piece of white acrylic.
I put some reflective tape around the acrylic plate and it ties in nicely w the rest of the Beo.

I would recommend that you invest in an Aprilia top box mount. I originally was going to build my own mount until I took the thing apart and decided that it was never intended to support any weight. The Aprilia Top Box mount attaches to the frame with a substantial steel bracket and it also includes new handle bar weights. The 500ie is almost balanced and when it is sitting on the center stand and it only takes a little weight to tip it back onto the back wheel. It would not be good to start the scooter on the center stand if the back wheel was touching the ground.

Hmm thats interesting because thats how all the other Aprilia top boxes mount to the Rack 150-250 Beos W 52 ltr case and sides, The only Steel bracketed storage is the Sides top is screwed to plastic only The Grab handles form the rear rack its Delrin or some heavy plastic You could do a hand stand on it Break it you'll kill yourself tryin But the Ie New light Im sure is somewhat different I was just wondering Why the 1 inch is needed why cant the givi plate go on rack ? Every inch of height is bad when it might weigh

The 500ie luggage rack is entirely made of plastic even the arms that attach to the body near the seat. Their is a sticker on the rack that tells how much weight it is designed to support. I have repainted my scooter so I no longer have the sticker but I do remember that the carrying capacity was light. When my Aprilia top box mounting kit arrived I thought that they had sent the wrong item because the box was so heavy. I opened the box it contained a seriously strong mounting bracket and a bunch of other hardware. It cost near $100. but it makes a very strong support system for any top box.
Foggio. You did a bang up job on the fabrication of your mount but I am concerned that having it attached to the exixting luggage rack without additional support will cause you problems in the future.

The max weight is 9kgs. The rack/grab handles are some sort of very hard synthetic material but I would feel more confident if it was made of aviation grade aluminum like used for wing spars. I am a bit concerned by the strength of that rack...
1in because I needed to countersink all four screws to attach the custom plate to the Aprilia rack and all four screws to the Givi plate. You need thickness for that.
The Givi plate holes and factory Aprilia rack holes do not align, you can try all day and night, they just don't! Hence the need for a plate in between.
Bob, you mention a mounting bracket from Aprilia but that works with the Aprilia factory topbox. Mine is a Givi and I would still need a plate in between, wouldn't I?
The beauty of the Givi box is that I can remove it in less than 5 seconds and carry it like a piece of luggage. I also have the roller luggage that I can put on the Givi plate.
May be you can post pictures of that Aprilia mounting bracket here. Does it attach to the rack/grab handles? Does it replace it?

9kgs is a little less than 20 lbs. My concern would be that their are other dynamics acting on your case. The screws that mount the factory installed pad on the luggage rack will not stand up to a lot of movement by a load inside the top case. A 70mph wind will give the mounting points a serious test.
I would think that you could mount any top box on an Aprilia mount. You would do basically what you did and that is to drill holes in the top box to match the mounting points on the mounting bracket. I can't tell you if the Aprilia mount has the quick release feature on either their top box or the Givi box. I have an SX Appeal top case on an Aprilia mount and it is a permanent mount.

I see, you put an Aprilia mounting bracket on your Beo and drilled holes in your box to align with the bracket's holes?
Where does the mounting bracket attach to?
The Givi plate is needed to get the full benefit of the quick release. I love being able to remove the box with a turn of a key! If that mounting bracket had hole that would align with the Givi plate, I sure would get it but I dont want to spend another $100 for nothing. And the Givi plate cannot be drilled, it's a mesh.

The Scarabeo 500ie takes the same top box as the Sport City but the kit comes with a 500ie specific base plate that replaces the plastic cover so that it works with the Givi quick release system.

Here is a thread on the AF1 Forum with pics of the install:

    Bob,
Do you have any pics of your bracket and the install?

Go up a few postings to the one from rockynv and click on the link within his posting. This link goes to another thread that shows an Aprilia support bracket that mounts to the frame of the bike and allows you to use the Givi quick release feature.

I attached the largish Give E470 (with brake light kit) to my 2009 500ie using the Givi mounting plate on the Aprilia (plastic) luggage cover, as in your photos. Had it for three years - long trips, commutes, high speed, in the twisties, passenger, no passenger. Very stable, very useful. Normally holds raingear, tools, all other 'stuff' - and securely stores my large helmet when off the bike.

As stated above, just watch the weight, due to the up-high, way-back position. If you fill it with heavy groceries, adjust your riding style, as if there is a passenger aboard.
