so 2nd time in two weeks iv had heads off this time i found that the sleeves were flush with cases now due to lack of time(race in two days) i made some shims and fitted under sleeves i could only get 0.002" shims is this going to make sleeves to high now and will the coolant leak in to the oil? iv tried to find heights but cant seem to find them.
sleeve height should be around 0.1 mm pref no more,
.002" is good, the sleeve o-rings should be OK but when I shim them like that, I use black Threebond to make sure.Originally Posted by birch223

Q. How do you accurately measure the sleeve to deck height/depth?
0.1mm is a fair bit (0.004")?.. thats good i was hoping 0.002" was not to much really hoping to get my next three race meets with out stripping eng again. I didnt use a sealant on orings but just lubed well with grease so they should be fine. thanks for you help
What I've noticed over the years is that the sleeve height on the early 06/07 motors were higher than what I'm seeing on the later 08/09 motors.
I also noticed that we rarely had head gasket problems with the early motors.
0.10 mm (004") is ok too but I would not go any higher.

There a couple of ways to measure.
Clean all the parts and install the sleeve in the cases without the bottom o-ring.
Place the cyl head on the top of the sleeve (nnot bolted) and use a feeler gauge to measure the gap from the head to the crankcase deck. Make sure the head is perfectly flat first.
Another method is to use a depth micrometer to measure the distance from the top of the deck to the machined step where the sleeve rests inside the case.
Now measure the sleeve length and subtract from the case depth.
