for those who have not followed the buildup thread, here it is.

So what do you need:

• 1x computer running windows
• 1x USB cable, either a home made (see instruction below) or a USB tuneboy cable if you already have one. The serial Tuneboy cable will NOT work- don't ask the serial cable won't work, no USB /keyspan adapter will do.
• 1x following the proper instructions to install the software.
• 1x READ the instruction manual on TuneECU.com

1. The cable.

1.1 - Buy a OBD2 OBD II Diagnostic USB Cable KKL409.1 VAG-COM 409 cable
for example, I got this one from amazon for $17. Price varies when they are in stock or not. Usually between $15 and $20

1.2 - For a proper job, buy the adapter and connector

1.3 - build your adapter cable following the diagram in the picture attached to the post.
The line point to the outside plug/pin exposed side of the connector, NOT the inside/crimp/weld section.

1.4 - Tuneboy Cable as of Nov 2010, if you are using the TuneBoy cable, you don't need to re-install the drivers. Tuneboy is using the same drivers as TuneECU - only difference is Tuneboy rename their USB cables and they provide the associated driver for windows to recognize your cable.

1.5 - Testing your home made cable
Connect the cable to the bike but NOT to the computer. Turn on your bike - you should see the LED light on the cable turn on. That light is powered by the bike NOT the computer.
If the light is not on, you have an issue in your adapter cable.

2. Getting the software

2.1 - Go to TuneECU.com and READ the installation instruction! http://www.tomhamburg.net/TuneECU_En/install1.html
2.2 - READ the point 2.1 above!
2.3 - Anybody complaining that something doesn't work and didn't read and follow the instruction will be out of luck!
2.4 - use the proper windows drivers and dotnet download mentioned. Exception for the TUneBoy cable, see point 1.5 above.

2.5 - the website is updated with the latest version for Aprilia.

You need to make sure you have at least version 1.7.8 - that's the first version that works with aprilia Caponord and Futura.

3. - How to use the software

3.2 - read again 3.1
3.3 - it's really not that hard, take 15mn to read the website, those familiar with tuneEdit/Tuneboy will find it similar, the data is the same after all.

3.4 - If possible , send me your Maps after you read them from your ECU.
Mainly interested in building a database of maps from around the world.

4 - Rewards

4.3 - I have to say, without Moto-Abruzzo and Leanit this wouldn't have happened. The first one got me going with the FTDI chip and figure out why the Tuneboy wouldn't work with any other cable, and Leanit for so generously having landed me his Serial cable numerous times.

4.4 - Thank you to Tom from the Triumph forum to have put me in contact with Alain and made all the updates to the tuneEcu.com website!

5 - Tips and trick to use TuneECU

5.1 - Reading the map currently in your bike:
Ignition ON, engine NOT running follow the direction.

5.2 - Indicator light.
in the bottom right corner, you have a flashing Red/Orange/Green light
Red - TuneECU not connected to the bike.
Orange - TuneECU being connected
Green - TuneECU connected to the bike.

The indicator is flashing/blinking.

5.3 - Rev Limit RPM

Compare to Tuneedit where you set different values , in TuneECU you only set 1 value, and the other 3 values are derived from the value you specify.
Rev Limit = 10.000 RPM

Restart Normal Fuel -50RPM = 9950RPM
Increase Fuel Cut +100RPM = 10.100RPM
Kill All Fuel +200RPM = 10.200RPM

In short, set your Cutoff RPM and don't worry about it.

5.4 - Thermo fan

Compare to TuneEdit that allows you to set different values for when the fan goes on , Off and ignition off - TuneECU provide only 1 value. the 2nd value is calculate with a 6 degree celsius difference.

• Set the value at 106
• the second values will be 100

5.5 - The arrows doing circle in the bottom left corner next to the Voltage

For bikes with an O2 sensors, this icon shows if the system is working in a closed-loop mode or open-loop mode.

6 - Comments

6.1 - The voltage indication in the bottom left corner seems to be 0.5 to 0.6V over the voltage at the battery - Similar differences in TuneBoy.

6.2 - the fall over sensor is not being shown on either TuneBoy or TuneECU

So what's next, use the thing... and please report to me any issue you may find. Alain/TuneEcu DO NOT have a Capo/Futura to test things.
I can test / verify your issues and report to Alain if need be.

And remember, 1.7.8 is the first version for our bike, nobody is perfect and shit happens. We feel the software is stable to release it. use it accordingly!

I have a technical issue. I had previously loaded Tuneboy and the cable driver on my laptop. I seem to be unable to get the cable to recognize the recommended driver from Alain's site ( CDM 2.06.00 WHQL Certified). I removed all of the Tuneboy program items, and the cable still does not ask to look for a driver. I try and do it manually, and it does not recognise to downloaded driver file as a driver. My computer skills are limited. Do you have any recomendations?

If you're using Tuneboy USB cable .... should be no need to unload TuneBoy or it's driver. I've been running both software through the same driver for months and had no issues.

The CDM 2.06.00 is just the latest FTDI driver - the only difference with the TuneBoy driver is he 'names' his cables and changes details in the two driver 'INF' files to reflect that.

Check in Windows, Hardware with the cable plugged in .... do you see it listed under 'Ports (COM & LPT'?

From the above it would seem that I get a USB/OBD cable (very cheap on ebay), then get the parts to build the ECU connector from Newark. Would I then remove the OBD connector from the USB cable and wire in the Aprilia ECU connector?. What would I use the J1962F connector for?.

Trancer ... the adapter cable comes with bare wires at one end, you need to fit the Capo plug to connect to the ECU. The OBDII connectors have to stay as one contains the circuit board.

Ah yes, I understand you now. I was thinking of just cutting off the OBD end which would of course lose the circuit board within.

Just trying to find a UK supplier for the molex plug and pins that doesn't require massive bulk order quantities or ridiculous shipping costs. Farnell has a minimum order for credit card payment and I am struggling to find something else to buy from them so I can meet it.

one question Christian, are the wiring diagram pinouts looking at the solder side of the plug or the pin side? As you know I no longer have the Aprilia OBD connector to check whether they're marked with pin numbers.

I think the first thing we all as a Capo and the Futura group need to do is say a huge big thank you to all of the peeps involved in this, a lot of time and patience has been used so it's the very least we can do.

You peeps have started the ball for us to be able to do our own ECU stuff without the outlay of mega ££. Getting ideas from each other regarding maps is a huge help, a database of maps is a bonus.

It would be helpful if somebody could sort out the second cable as not all peeps have much in the soldering skill, or they may not feel confident enough, just a thought.

I think the first part of this post should be a sticky for info and updates only, not for general comments as it could get bogged down.

When ordering the molex plug/pins I ordered extras in an attempt to meet the minimum order requirements. When the plugs/pins arrive I will be able to offer the extras to UK owners for basically the cost of individual postage.

The female OBD plug I found for £6ish on ebay (its an OBD/BMW adapter), so I will have to cut off the BMW connector and attach the ECU connector. The molex pins are a crimp type affair so you really don't need to solder if you don't feel confident or able.
