    tuono top speed

from the factory, do the 1st gen tuonos have a governor

for the first time, tonight i got a "good" chance to really open up my T to see what she can do. (when is it ever a good chance when not on a track...)

anyway, as i hit 6th gear and hit the gas, i got up to 137mph at about 9k - 9500 rpm's (wasn't really looking down all the much) i could have sworn i was still hitting the gas, but maybe i wasn't.

what are other peoples experiences with tuono top speed? i know this may seem like a ridiculous question/topic, but i'm interested.

Listed top speed bone stock was 150mph. I've had mine to an indicated 150 once. I had the factory race pipe and I think I was running 16/44 sprockets. Usually the highest I'll get is 130ish, though I haven't done that in a long while either. Your bike should defintiely have had more in it. I don't think even a 15/44 sprocket set up would drop the top speed THAT much.

Are you SURE you were in 6th?

Are you as big as a house?

    Did you have a passenger?

well, isn't this a nice little PNW discussion!

Yes, you should have more, but - - - how did it feel, and who gives a hoot? Go buy a Heya-heya-busha if you need top speed.

I saw 143 tootling down to Quilcene to get to the Seal Rock campsite (coming off 101 at the 10mph exit at the bottom of the hill, na?) No sweat, really... great road!

IF I remember, I had the stock rear and a 15 front, as that was before I replaced the chain @ about 21k... with a 16/44. I haven't been out for a proper toot since, dang it!

Did 130 on mine once, never bothered since.

When I had an FZR1000 I used to be doing 150 whenever I got the chance, now I dont bother as my licence needs me!

Never rode a Tuono, but I hit 145 on my RSVR and my friend hit 150 on his Falco. He had tank and side bags on there. He said the Falco had nothing left and actually started slowing down once in 6th, my RSVR had plenty to go!!!

130 to 140 does not sound too bad considering there is very little fairing on only the front of the Tuono. Never heard of an electronic governor on the bike....Aprilia just uses air resistance as the speed limiter.

    Hi mate,

Had an indicated 155mph on my tuono the other month and would not go any faster, in fact this is with the stock gearing, think it would squeeze 160mph out if dropped the gearing a bit as it could not use all the rpm's.

only mods are gabro chip and race can.

Top speed shoot-out on one of our Hoons in the Alps saw all the Tuonos (eight I think) doing 155-158, fully loaded with tank bags and panniers, all in different states of tune, gearing and exhausts. Aerodynamics seem to be the limiting factor.

I see to recall that the ORIGINAL Tuono was around £18000 new......
Only 200 of them made (and yours ain't one of them FTM.....) worldwide.

when mine was original with the front nose cone i got an indicated 156 and my helmet was doing its best to break my nose so i got got me chin vibrating on the tank and it went upto 160. since it has become a flying brick i reckon 150 is max but cant tell cause it keeps melting the speedo cable so speedo dont work anymore.

thanks for all the input, guys!

the one thing i do know is that the gentleman who owned the bike before i did had put a bigger rear sprocket on. in the manual maintenance log he wrote "+2 rear sprocket" so im assuming its a 44. still not sure about the front. it also has a titanium race can. everything is stock im pretty sure.

and also, to answer a few question: i did not have a passenger, i am positive i was in 6th, and i'm not exactly the size of a house. 6'2" 190, not that bad, right? haha

what does everyone have to say about getting a power commander for the T?

Keep in mind, there is an aerodynamic limit to consider. The RSV will hit the wall much later than a Falco/Tuono. My Falco did 154 mph. With a smaller guy on it, the top speed was a tad faster, same day, same strip of asphalt. My theory is that he had the chance to tuck tighter......

When on the autobahn this year me and Harry (Factory T second generation, luggaged up) had a shoot out, I was showing 165 (R1 BMX conversion, full luggage) when I rolled off cos he was well beat. However, when checking speeds on the sat nav it was noticeable that my R1 and Windy's latest Tuono Factory were optimistic by 10 miles an hour when over 90 mph, so in real terms, knock 10 miles an hour off whatever the speedo is showing I reckon.

It's a good thing actually as at an indicated 100mph we are probably 'only' doing 90 and that 10mph can make a big differnce if plod was watching.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 2003 Australian Motorcycle News clocked an 03 Tuono at 264kph (164mph) at Avalon airbase. From memory the bike was standard, may have had an Akra slip on.
Ive had mine to 240kph, bike was nice & stable with some to come but I chickened out & rolled off.

There's also gearing to consider as well. When they made the Tuonos they changed the gearing ratio compared to the Mille. First two gears are taller, top two gears are shorter than the Mille. Probably felt the need as the Tuono has an upright riding position and less front end weight bias.
