    engine temp

    HI,
This is my first post. I bought my Flame Red 2001 RST back in January. I just recently joined this forum. I do have a question. During my commute my engine temp ranges from 204 in city and 178 on the open road. The air temp is around 94. Is that a normal temp range for the Futura?
    Thanks for any info.

Mine runs about 173*F at highway speed in fair weather.

    Up and Down

I think you'll find that running temp. is around 170 deg. but if you comute and have to stop frequently it will rise to 200 before the fans kick in bringing it down to running temp. again.

So I would say anywhere between 170 and 200 is normal.

    Temp

    Sounds OK.

When the temps are that high here in Florida,
it doesn't take much to get the readings above
my bikes apparent 170 degree 'open road' norm.

In stopped traffic, the fans kick in around 204 indicated, and return it back below 200 while they are running.

My '01 typically runs between 166-168 on the open road. Higher in stop and go.

Looking a lot at this lately for no particular reason, running 170 ish normal driving, higher in the city, but I noticed the other day cuising about 40 mph or so running about 6K on the rpms (for no reason really other than not wanting to shift) temps were running almost 180. kind of weird I didn't expect to see that. Not that it's a problem, just more heat in higher rpm's does make a diff. ( which I expect, just never noticed.)

    ENGINE TEMP

Went for a great 400 mile ride saturday and for a few hours we were riding hard in temperatures of 115F at canyon strafing speeds. I kept a close eye on the engine temp which never went below 198F, and when we stopped the engine temp would climb instantly and fans would come on...but back to 198 again as soon as we were underway.

I was riding with buddies on an air cooled ZR-7, a 650 honda hawk and an SV650 - both 650's were coughing a little from the heat but the RST never missed a beat and neither did the ZR-7.

You gotta love the Joe Rocket Phoenix gear in temps like that!

    Re: ENGINE TEMP

Prior to a few months ago, I'd say about the time of water pump seal fix #3 8o , the temperature behavior of my bike was (all temps are degrees F):

    * 90 seconds to warm up to 112 from cold
    * Cruise at 170, pretty much regardless of external temps
    * 200-210 in Texas summer traffic, a bit less in less extreme around-town enjoyment

Prior to the water pump seal fix #3, I had added some Prestone anti-freeze (diluted as indicated on the container).

Since that time, the temperature behavior of my bike has been:

    * 60 seconds to warm up to 119 from cold
    * Cruiser at 170, occasionally at 178-180 though
    * 200-210 in Texas summer traffic, but had one alarming few minutes on a ride when I was at 229, while a fellow Futuristi (two-up) was simmering at about 207. Hasn't really happened again to that extent.

My bike seems to get warmer faster. Dunno if that's really a problem (fans are coming on, two separate shops have checked it out, determined it to be both okey and dokey).

I just worry a lot I guess. Would hate to be by the side of the road in 100 degree Texas commuting traffic...
