    Need a cheapo wheel chock.

Hey guys I am going to "trailer" my bike in a Ford Van and I wanted to get a wheel chock so that it doesn't go crashaing down. I don't need anything special.....just something cheap that will do the job.

    Thanks

    Wood

    2 x 4 's , a saw and a screw gun.

Add some screws and you're done.

    Custom wheel chock.

    Cheap and easy.

Yeah I thought about that one....is 2 inches high enough to really hold the wheel from moving or should I double stack them?

If your looking for something to simply hold the tire straight and then tie the bike down using straps then sure build your own. If you looking to build a chock that will "hold" the bike then I'd say spend the $200 and get a real one. If your a welder than sure make your own but I would not consider building one out of wood and expect it to "hold" my bike while being transported.

If you insist on going with the cheap method look at converting a stand to hold the bike in place via the foot pegs. I've seen others go this route with some success....still requires tie down straps. Saving a few bucks now may result in more $ later in repairs and not to mention frustration and down time. Saving money is all well and good but there are times you just have to throw that notion out the window...imho

I'm not looking for the chock to hold the bike by itself. I just want to hold the front wheel from turning. The bike will be tied down anyway.

I use a home made version of the type they sell at the blackand gray link.

I've got a small 2' x 2' piece of plywood with two chunks of 4X4 about 12" long screwed to it that run parallel to the tire/wheel. (The tire fits snug.) I've got another piece of 4X4 screwed fast to the tops of those two 4X4s. Whn looking down from the top it looks like a "U" shape. Screw something to the bottom of the plywood base that might slip into one of the seat "holes" in the floor of the van if you're worried about it moving around. I screw mine down to the wood deck of an old utility trailer.
Then again i don't trailer bikes too often. But at least they stay put.

They have the pitbull front wheel chocks in the forum mall. I mounted this chock in the bed of my truck, works well and is easily removable. $50

    Don't lay

the 2 x 4 's flat, stand them so the 3 1/2 inches is on each side of the wheel, use two small 2 x 4 blocks as spacers, one in front of the wheel (up higher like a stop) and one down low in back. You can even put the sides on an angle to get more of the wheel in the "saddle". Screw that assembly to a couple of 4 or 5 ft lenghts (as crossbars) and with some eyebolts you can gently strap the bike to them to hold it upright. You'd be surprised how strong it is.

I like the idea of using the long 2x4 across the bottom w/ eyebolts to strap the bike down too....sorta combing the tie down points and wheel chock. Thanks, I'll remember that one!

Now i've got a little more firewood and a project for the next time i've got left over 2x4s.

I have used inexpensive wheel chocks before, and I will not do it again. If you are going to purchase something, I found it best to spend the extra cash and get a Pingel, or something comperable. I purchased a cheap on once for about $20.00 at a local dealer. It was not steady, had way too much flex, and even though it was supposed to fit, almost damaged my rotors.

I have heard the most expensive tool you can buy is a cheap on. I would tend to agree. Making one yourself would be the best alternative because you will have a hand in how well it is put together.

Do a search using the words, wheel chock on ebay and you will turn up a dozen or so that are less than $50. Mostly all Pingle.
