Just pointing out that your information was not based on personal knowledge or experence. You mentioned bikes blowing up, I have seen many 636's blow up, but that does not make it a bad bike. There are lots of people around here racing the 675 and i have had no problems finding parts realy reasonably priced. and just for the record I am a #1 plate holder.

I found a great deal on a 08 675, and a great deal on a Honda VFR 400 (there again parts might be difficult to find for that one). I don't want to spend too much money (more then 8k) on my first track bike.

JebD- the 250 has a the stock tires on it, I have not been able to find other then the OEM tires for it. I only wish.

thanks guys for all the help.
Michilin and bridgestone make good tires for the 250. if you want the number to my tire guy let me know he will hook you up.

Ive seen the motors blow many times but I have experenced the transmission problems first hand. I endurance race a 636. The guy that owns it put in some shift drum kit and said it was night and day better.

I did my first few track days on my first bike, a GSXR 750. After having the rear tire spin up a few times, I really knew I was over my head and hence slowed the learning process. My next bike was a 01 Mille, much better "learning" bike at the track. The Mille was still quite a handful. Once I realized that I was going to continue this track day thing, I purchased a sv 650. It was wrecked with 750 miles, so I put a GSXR front on it for next to nothing. My first trackday on the SV, I was 3 seconds a lap faster than my Mille (overall slow).
First, I didn't "worry" about dropping the SV because it was a dedicated track bike and not dual street/track. The power is great, good enough but no too much to spin up the rear (I ran Pilot Race). The knowledge base on the SV is great and so is the aftermarket (especially compared to Triumph/aprilia/ ducati) with prices that don't kill you. V-twin power, especially in a small package, allows the rider confidence.
The only drawback to the SV is if you are on a long track (a track with a lot of long straights or really high speeds) Any meduim to small track and the SV will be your best friend.

Why not rebuild your RSV to track bike and buy something else for the road?
The RSV is an excelent track bike. OK, it might lack a bit of power compared to the Jap 1000's but it for sure gains it back in the turns.

    UPDATED

Sold my 748 and just bought a new Honda CBR 1000RR. Over the Winter I'll convert it to track only and it will probably be my main track bike.

I have too much $$$ invested in the Mille to sell it or part it out and besides - I still love my Mille track Ho better than any other bike I have ever ridden...

Cool, Hank. Sounds like a fun project as well as a good step up for next season. I still have my SV-650 for track days, it's paid for and crashes well!

True - it is getting delivered to the track this Saturday.

Unfortunately it may be cold and raining so IDK if I even will be breaking it in that day... Might have to wait until Spring!

This weather sucks! John (This End Up) just sent me pictures from his backyard where it actually has been snowing! And he only lives about an hour away!

My first time with the CBR was in the rain. I had a blast out there.

Nothing like spinning the rear tire at 150 mph.

    And then crashing going 30.
