It's high maintenence compare to a street bike. Pretty normal compare to other MX bikes. Frequent oil changes, Checking bolts often cuz the twin shakes shit loose, engine rebuilds definatly come more often than any proper street bike (check your owners manual).
no harm ment toploader.... just feel that some of the problems these things have are avoidable with the information posted on this forum.
and it might save the new lad some effort .... he is as excited as i was only i was like it for 4 months . got it on wednesday and still havent been able to ride it due to starter, starter clutch ,etc its only got 1400 miles and a full service history ,is this not high maintenence ? my ktm wasnt like this ....
Bump start it if the starter cooks on you! I guess it's like 2nd gear in the older R6's, they're crap. His new 08 should be good if proper starting procedure is used ALWAYS and if it does break I would expect it to be covered by the dealer. You can expect more down time with your new SX than you had with the 10. IMO the SX is the best SECOND bike you could ever have. It's not designed to get you to and from work everyday, but, some do it. It's built to race.
well said .
you mentioned bump starting the sxv ...is it ok to do this .
i thought because of the fuel injection it could create a problem ???
if so i am off on it right now!!![]()
High maintenance is probably the wrong term to use... more like prone to failure. Nobody wants to see that in a post, but lets be realistic here, these bikes are built for performace (read that as tweaked tight) with just enough capability in parts (like the starters) to get the bike to run without adding any more weight than neccessary. The trade off for the power and weight is more frequent failures. You also need to remember that as far as designs are concerned, this is only the fourth year for these things and there have been some major design changes already to improve reliability and performance. This is not as reliable as a DRZ or a (insert any other SM name here) but grab a handfull of throttle before asking why would anybody want an Ape. If changing the oil every 300 miles helps to keep it from eating itself from the inside out, so be it. When it does have a major failure, I'll send it to one of the gurus for a pro fix and be glad they are around to get it running again!
JMO, by the way.
I've not seen anyone suggest a bump start is bad for these bikes in anyway. Find a slope and let gravity do the work. I've never been able to start mine on flat ground by myself. Just make sure you let it warm up as normal in neutral.
How is using the rear wheel through the transmission to turn the motor any different from using the starter to turn the motor?
Newb's ask Newb questions..... Thats what we're here for!
All I know is you CAN bump start these bikes and it's not caused me any problems. It's a great way to get your bike started when your starter doesn't work!
I am one of the biggest critics of Aprilia (not this bike but their launch). I say bullshit to most of the above. The difference is you have to be aware and sensitive to the differences of the SXV/RXV.
It is a far cry different than fuel it and ride the fuck out of it. They do not shake everything loose unless it had a poor PDI. They run superb if you find a competent shop and a lover of the bike.
If you buy the bike through some jerk off lawn mower shop then you will get a fucked up motorcycle because some dipshit could care less (the biggest Aprilia fault--selling to any fuck head with a shop).
Half of the issues here are a result of mechanical ignorance and misuse of the bike for its intended purpose--like riding 2 up.
YOU MUST BE PROFICIENT mechanically and meticulous about a few items. If you are, the bike will kick ass in the long haul.
Anyone else here have wet sleeve experience?? It ain't no DRZ.
wax,
I'm a little confused, "YOU MUST BE PROFICIENT mechanically and meticulous" and your calling bullshit on; change the oil often, check your bolts, and, start your bike properly....?
and I question your suggestion that 2 up riding is misuse, but, thats an argument I don't need to waste anyone's time with.
Hellboy is getting off a ZX10 and on to an SX. The SX definatly takes more time and attention then his previous ride.
Stupidest most innacurate post ever on the new sxvs.High maintenance is probably the wrong term to use... more like prone to failure.
2008 and newer they dont burn oil anymore and the engines dont grenade.
ive got 3500 miles on mine in six months no issues.
high maintenance accurate? hell yes. oil change recommended every 300 miles and gear oil changes every 600ish.
I change the oil every 400 and gear oil every 800 and I do lots of track days and only ride full tilt up in twisties.
zero problems.
never read any 08 problems for most part either.
issues were with 07 not 08.
sooooooo fiesty ....meat anyone ???
mose has just made a fair point . he wasnt being stupid buddy . as far as i can tell the bikes are for a dedicated group of people with cash to burn who work hard and play hard !!
in point of fact i dont think he was being year spacific .
someone said on a post to me that these bikes are the best SECOND BIKE you can own .....
is it true the 08s are less prone to starter / charger / clutch starter problems ?? thanks i brought an 08 bike not thinking about its yom 07 ..
i am off to bump start this sucker !!!!!! thanks poeple .![]()
