    Light weight tags

SEE THE LATEST IN LIGHT WEIGHT TAGS.

The trooper pulled me over to ask what happened to your tag?

"Well it was there when I left this morning."

He turned out to be a nice guy and gave me a warning.

My solution was a backer plate executed in CF of course which I installed last night. It fits inside the ridgeline on the backside of the plate and is only visible from the front side of the plate. Attaching it at the 4 corners with the thru bolts should keep it from breaking off again whilst it wanks around back there.

I guess flat trackin on bouncy gravel roads isn't good for skinny tags.

The SXV vibrates like crazy. My plate is starting to crack where it is attached so I need to figure something out to make it last.

Thats why I custom made a CF one for the other side of the tag. The face side is raised - if you can see from the remaining corners. Having a doubler on the backside still keeps the smaller tag profile while supporting the metal at all four corners. It ain't gonna break unless the bolts sheer off!

Not sure why you are so fixed on the lightweight thing.

For license plates out here and custom mounts I back up the plate thin peice of 1/16" alum. Then use a outside plate frame, carbon (for looks or alum.) and four bolts/lock nuts and of course proper washers. Doing that might add 3-6 ounces. You are riding a street bike, and on the street. Sure you race, but on a street bike. And one that shakes a lot. Sometimes we have to put things back into proper perspective...

A ex-world champion superbike rider told me once in the pits when talking about lightening up the internals of a certain superbike engine, "Why worry about a 4-8 ounces in there, as I can take a good Sh*t before a race and that would negate 40 hours for grinding on the internals"........

Ok he was a little crazy, but not far off. And we're talking dirt-bikes on the street. Yeah sure I have many thousands in carbon fiber on one of my superbikes, but at the end of the day, it adds to the Farkle factor, mostly...

    Cheers,

Plates are made of o stock aluminum. Very malluable that's how they stamp the numbers and letters in it. You can rivet a thin piece of stainless steel on the back of the plate or use aluminum but use t-3 or t-6. Or you can get nuts and bake the plate at 350 deg for 6 hrs to make it t3 but most licenes plates have a sticker coating that might not hold up to the heat. Kitchen oven in the middle. Let the plate air cool or it will warp.

My father-in-law makes custom carbon fiber carb bodies. I'll see if he will make me something. WHY CF? Cause I can.

a rubber washer on both sides of the mount holes seems like a quicker fix.

CAUSE I CAN - PRECISELY WHY I DID IT! It has nothing to do with weight! However, that being said today whilst I was watching the F1 qualifying the announcers were sharing how one team sent the car out for tests to see if the body work would hang in there with one less screw! - maybe a couple of grams.

If I were obsessed I would just go to an autoclutch & LHRB. That way I could cut off my right leg and save 30-40 lbs.

I just had some trash CF (warped weave) laying around so laid up 4 layers and cut to fit.

Come to think of it a solid plate isn't necessary - maybe I'll swiss cheese it with the hole saw.

they say worrry about the grams and the pounds will come off...

i did my r 1 with 2 screws like that and lost it the plate cracked in half i am thinking it is just the air flexing it ...

Since I lost 1 plate on the road I now make 2 aluminum plates to hold my license plates on. 1 that the plate mounts to that mounts to the plastic and 1 that is on the backside of the plastic to help keep the 1st bracket attached.
