    Strange problem?

I have an 03 rsv and recently it has developed a strange problem.

A few times when sitting at lights etc the bike has just suddenly died like i turned the key off. I turn off the key and turn it back on again but get the 4 clicks and kph change as the clocks reset. the bike then starts fine. This has happened once or twice and also when riding i have felt a stutter in the power delivery as if the bike has lost pwer for a second but then it kicks back in and continues as normal.

Then today the strangest one happened, after riding to work and leaving the bike for a few hours i went home for lunch and as i turned the key the clocks were blank and no fuel pump prime or anything bike was totally dead, then i turned the key off and it did the 4 clicks as it reset. i tried it again and trhe same thing happened then third time lucky it just behaved as normal and started fine.

Battery terminals are tight, anyone got any other ideas? Thanks in advance

Most dash resetting is due to low battery voltage. This often leads to a damaged and ineffective starter relay. There are many threads on starting, relay, and charging system problems. Do a search using the key words listed below and you will find lots of information.

    starter relay
    yamaha relay
    brown connector

Same thing happened to me my first season with my '01. Didn't do a thing to it and the problem went away. Italian electrical gremlins decided to shack up in your wiring for a bit? Beyond that check that your fuses are fully inserted, your grounds are good and tight (one on the rear cylinder, another on the right side of the frame under the tank near the upper sub frame bolt on that side. Even if you're battery cables are tight, if the ground straps are loose or corroded that could cause an issue. I will say that I have not had the problem since I completely stripped the frame down for powder coat and while I don't recall any bad grounds, if they were there they were definitely fixed in the process.

If it were me, I would clean all your terminals between the batt and starter, also the ground strap. Anything that cuts power to the dash would reset the clocks.

hi draging this up again as its started doing it more, The most noticable thing and probably telling of how to diagnose it is that when it cuts out and you turn the key off and then back on again nothing happens but its only when you turn the kay back off that the clocks resetting happens!

So i'm thinking maybe a bad earth? How should i check the earthing and where is best to start? cheers

There is really only one ground. Follow the battery negative cable to the inside of frame on the right. The main harness ground is under the same bolt. Some will point out that there is a cable from that bolt to the engine but it is redundant because the engine is solidly bolted to the frame at eight points. The extra cable seems to have been eliminated from 04 and later RSVR's
