Hey my first track day too!

What a blast... I was at the Streets of Willow Springs, a tight, 8 turn, 1.8 mile road course this past weekend. My box-stock, new Challenge Cup bike made mince-meat of most of the 40 or so Ducatis in attendance. Nothing like light weight and skinny tires!

The bike ran well and handled great except for a large amount of front-end chatter at the entrance to a fast right-hand corner. What's the best way to dial out the chatter? Stiffer fork springs?

Cornering clearance was also an issue. This newbie was grinding the foot pegs. Will rear-sets take care of this problem?? I think it will really be a problem once I learn to ride the bike properly and start going fast. I'm 175 pounds without leathers on.

Overall, an excellent experience and what a great bike!!

Congrats mate, glad you had fun.

Yeah, cornering clearance is an issue somewhat. Remove the hero blobs (I don't know if the cup bikes get 'em anyway). Rearsets seem to help, or, perhaps try getting your weight lower, or off the side more, something else to work on!!

Tell me more about the chatter. Is it under braking, or tipping in? You trail braking? How much suspension travel you using (a zip tie round the fork stanchion will show you). What tyres you running? Tyre perssures? Yeah, the front end does tend to be a bit soft, but we need to understand what's really happening first Just another excuse to get out there again!!

    Cheers

    About $6k

that's used, IF you can find one.

Some 04's about, but not many, I think 35 total in the US.

Thought I'd throw in my two cents worth. Just completed my last trackdays of the season at Jennings last weekend. Did a total of 10 with 8 on my 04 RS250 (which I took delivery of 7/03) logging 750mi on the track. On my first trackday I had a trackside suspension service (Ohlin/Showa) do a basic set up($50), it made a significant improvement. I'm 145lbs and the setup from the factory was way to light even for me. They also do a full geometry setup for $150 which is supposed to really improve the speed of rolling into the turns; that's next on my agenda. There were only 3 RS250's and 3 TZ's or Honda RS's at Jennings but let me tell you they were all smoking. I don't have to tell you guys how the 250 handles; at Jennings which IS a 250 track everything bigger was in my way. Been riding 30 yrs but just started the trackday thing this year, as a novice of course. Actually I,m on the hunt for a TZ125 for next year, might do some racing. Not once all season did my 250 feel unsure of itself, great bike.

I plan to take it up to the track in the spring Portland raceway, or Sears Point.(Infineon?)Must be loads of fun. Joe.. 67 yrs. Started riding when I was 11.All Kinds of bikesowned and ridden. trackday

    Richard,

Were you there with GP motorcycles & Aprilia Ducati of Oceanside trackday?

I was on a rs250 basically stock except for rearsets. (#590)

Rearsets help the ground clearance. I weigh close to 200lbs and have put on a stiffer rear spring on the bike and the stiffer front fork springs to assist with the handling.

I do not get any chatter @ all. I also run Pirelli tires. I have my bike setup pretty stiff because I usally race @ the big track and it is somewhat bumpier than the streets. You are fast enough to be racing. Get out and do your new racer school and come out and have some fun on the big track.

Uncle Steve, What makes you say your bike is an '04? I can't possibly see why you call it anything different to what it says on the ID plate? If you took delivery of it in July, it'd have to have a build date early '03, correct? There has been no change to these things since '98, (except decals, which still didn't effect the cup bikes) so it's not like I could see your bike an '04 because it's sporting '04 updates. And last, but not least, aren't the cup bikes offically out of production in '03? Even here in Aus, where we've been told we wil get them till '05, I think it's just selling up existing stock.......and that would make all new bikes '03s

It's a common game played by manufacturers. Just like you can buy an 04 model car in Sept. I'm in the boat biz and you could buy an 04 boat in June. In my case the MSO (manufacturers statement of origin) for my Aprilia RS250 says 04 despite its 03 production date. Not sure where the various manufacturers have their model year cutoff dates.

Mike, yes that was me. We met, right? You were with Balz talking. I'm not sure if I'm going to make it to the Dec new rider's school, but definitely will in the next couple of months.

Probackmarker... I was running only 28 pounds of air in the tires, because it was really cold (in the 50s in the morning) and I was searching for as much grip as possible. Would that explain it? Are the springs that come in the spare kit stiffer than the stock springs?

Looks like I'll be searching for rearsets, too. The Cup bikes can still be found at dealers around here... I picked mine up used, with only 5 miles on it for a great price. The story goes that the guy bought it, took it home, and when his wife saw that it didn't have a rear seat, made him take it back to the dealer.

A buddy just picked up a '97 with Calif plates, imported from Croatia. I'm looking for a clean Calif-titled bike too, so if anyone knows of one... please let me know.

    Thanks for the tips everyone!
