    Oil Drip on Futura?

    Good day
I have not been able to ride the Fut for the last 4 to 5 weeks, as I recover from surgery. This morning, as I was leaving for church I noticed a small puddle under the bike and what seems to be an oily substance. I just placed a plastic pan underneath to collect the drip and look. It does show where the puddle was earlier.

Being fairly new to this game I wonder if this is something that can happen as a result of not riding it, and secondly, I assume this will require work?

Any feedback and ideas is greatly appreciated.

depends on how you lube the chain. I use an auto oiler and every once in a while excess oil drips onto the ground just about where your spot is.

It's possible your clutch slave is leaking. But that would be a pretty big leak. You'll know pretty quickly as you will not have a clutch. rick

could it be from the front cylinder? I know people mentioned a breather hose that drips onto the front header. I get small amounts of smoke from the front from time to time if the bike sits for a while.

How about the oil pressure sending unit?

Mine leaked when it was new and was replaced.

BTW: Are those the original Met Z4 tires? If so, your you may have more than an oil leak in your list of future problems.

    Yep

Those are the original tires to be changed very soon. Bike was not ridden and has not been ridden for 5 weeks like I said, so this is a spontaneous leak there. Looks like a tow to AF1 will be in orders

I got over 7,500 miles out of my original tires.
I could have gone another 1,000 everyone said to get rid of them.

I thought about the tires i used in the 70's and i thought the z4 were pretty good tires.Everything in perspective. Plus i was being frugal...

In the 70's i was happy to have air in my tires!!

At that spot there are a lot of possibilities:
    - all of the above, plus
    - oil cooler hose
    - drain plug of oil tank
    - stator cover
    - oil filter cover
    - carter drain plug
    - etc

I suggest you remove the lower LH fairing panel (requires removal of upper) and check

In the 70's z4s would have been phenomenal. Best thing you could get back then was hard ass Dunlops.

I agree its best to pull stuff apart and look for a source, just work your way up.

I'll bet it's the water pump seal leaking oil from the weep hole on the right side. Well documented and I have the problem too. The water pump shares a seal with the oil side and legend has it the seal wasn't installed properly at the factory. There's a whole thread on it in "1000cc f.a.q."

I keep a paper plate under that spot and the leak never gets any worse. A couple of drops after every ride and that's it. I top it up about once a month and no worries. If you want it fixed, kzmille is supposed to be the man to do it (see 1000cc f.a.q. thread).

    That's my guess.
