    Question Swingarm removal HELP!!!

I have got the rear end stripped down. Removed castle nut, removed nut from other side of swingarm. The swingarm pivot wont budge! Does the large hex nut on the side where the castle nut is have to come off? If so, what size is it? DAMN!!! I want to get this thing finished!

Yep it has to come out. It's a 14mm hex key. Same as the stearing head one. The nut on the other side is 26mm from memory.

Yup, the left side is a 26mm nut, already got that one. The damn thing is, a 14mm hex wrench or socket is a pita to find without ordering it! Damn Damn double Damn.

I've got a spare here in OZ if you want and I'll ship it. Otherwise check on the RSV board to see if you can borrow one from someone. I'm sure someone must have one to help out, after all it's common to the stearing stem.

Don't suppose you've checked your local bike shop for one? At least for a 6 pack of beers most would be obliging, especially seeing you only need it for 2-3 hours!

I'm not afraid to buy one, I just don't want to wait. I will more than likely have to order it and that will take a few days to get to me. She is torn apart hanging on a pipe on jackstands in my garage begging to be ridden! Plus, I like to keep going on projects like this to keep the re-assembly fresh in my mind!

Have you checked your local bike shops, to see if you can borrow one? After all it's metric and most bikes except for Harley and Buell use metric. That way it may cost you a 6 pack of beer!

I do know what you are going through as far as wanting to complete a task as soon as you start it! I feel for you. If you were just around the corner rather than OS, you could have my spare for a 6 pack, although my homebrew is far better than any commercially available beer!!!!!

    Good luck.

Don't suppose you've tried improvising, after all 14mm is between 9/16th's and 5/8th's, as far as a bolt is concerned.

The local shops are real buggers about loaning tools, and can't say I blame them. I don't like to loan my tools and I don't like to ask. As far as improvising goes, I don't want to dog up the opening by using the wrong tool. Homebrew....mmmmmmmm....beeeeeer.

Jeez, seems like you and I are the only ones ever on here. What is the time difference over there anyway?

    Tee-Dub,

Isn't the spark plug spanner 14mm? I know it's usually made from lead or something equally useless, but... worth a try...

Not sure that would work. What I'm removing here is a giant hex head nut. The socket or wrench goes inside of it, not around it.

Hey, don't feel bad. Your comment got me looking in the factory tool kit anyway and low and behold, there it was, a large allen key at the end of what looks like a shitty sparkplug socket! It has been so long since I looked at those crappy tools, I didn't even realize that it was there! Kind of a sloppy fit, but it worked. Then the next hurdle was getting the swing arm past the rear header pipe. I ended up having to loosen the two lower nuts on the header at the engine, then pried the arm past it. There is a third nut on the header at the top of the engine, but no matter what swivel socket or tool I tried I couldn't get to it. It would be nice to loosen it a bit so I don't scratch the hell out of my Mille swingarm when I put it on. Any ideas how you get to that top nut on the header pipe?

BTW, is it just me or is the forum especially slow tonight?

I'm glad you found something that works... I forgot all about that allen key/socket dealy...

I don't know about the top bolts on the header... have you tried to attack it from above the engine... you may have to move some crap outta the way?

Yeah, I have noticed it's kinda slow... although it's only early evening for me here... Tell me, are you in Vancouver Washington, or Vancouver, British Columbia? I'm hopefully emigrating to Canada in the first half of next year...

    Cheers - Demosthenes

hi T-D, there's a really detailed explaination i'm going to use here:-
    http://falco.hadeler.net/Sections+in...-7-page-1.html

it dosn't mention the header nut removal in detail -

The header was actually a very tight fit and was a little difficult to remove. After removing the springs that hold it in place, I loosened the nuts on the header coming off the rear cylinder to have a little extra 'wiggle room.' A little tapping with a rubber mallet helped get the header out without additional drama.
maybe it's just over-torqued or perhaps a little siezed (pretty likely considering it's location & crap it's exposed to). try giving it a liberal dose of anti-seize oil, leave it a few mins then give it another go.

    UNLESS SOMEONE ELSE KNOWS DIFFERENT???
