    Sid,

Are you sure you have the front LED's wired correctly? LED's are directional and only work when the pos(+) and neg(-) are correct.

I know nothing about the newer Aprilia's and how they are wired. Do they use a CAN bus now? If you have a bulb warning light, it's safe to assume there is a bit more to the circuit now. If you want to PM me the wiring schematic I can try and come up with something for you. Cheers!

    Hi Falco,

Thanks for the reply. Did nothing different front to back (or so i thought) Familiar with the principle of the LED being directional but my electrical brain was over-riding the common sense telling me +ve is red and the usual common is brown leaving black/blue to pair. Apparently not the case!!! I need me an auto electrics cause i reckon

Needless to say i'm embarassingly fixed for now.

    Sid

LOL! No problem Sid. That has NEVER happened to me.....

It's good to be "humbled" once in awhile. Helps keep you in check. Glad you got it sorted.

The wiring colours threw me before, dark blue is the return for Aprilia, not black like it is for the rest of the world :-/

It works with the 1N4004 diode. All i had kickin round so just used them, SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!! Also works with the three blade led flasher, You just need to connect a ground wire to the frame and crimp a female spade connector to the other end and hook it up to the ground blade on the flasher,. "piece of piss" as we say in NZ. Cheers

Hey, an unrelated question but I'm trying not to blow things up. LED's are directional, as has been said. But if you hook them up backwards, are they ruined, or do they just not work?

They just won't work. The only way I can see ruining them is to put too much current through them.

Quite correct.. They're diodes so reverse biasing them wont hurt at all but excess current most certainly will

Interesting. I have most definitely fried a few LED's in the past by connecting them the wrong way round, not indicators or the like which perhaps have idiot proof protection on them of some sort, but out of the packed individual items.

The data sheets have a max reverse voltage and current and I thought that was the issue, so a little more info would be appreciated.

An example is at a party I was taping LED's to 3V calculator batteries popping them in a rubber glove, blowing up the glove and chucking them in the pool, but that's a whole other story. Thing is a mate was helping and although I told him about the long and short leads, he got a couple the wrong way and they were toast.

Sorry, I read it as "diode". LED's are a bit different than diode's. They actually work (light up) on about 3v, and require current limiting resistors to operate properly at 12v. Power diodes like the ones being used in this thread (IN series) are pretty much ..... as you said, idiot proof. LED's on the other hand can be a bit fickle. I have seen some that fail prematurely. Each color has different tolerances. Reading the data sheet for the respective LED can help explain what will damage them. Don't ask me to decipher that stuff. I'm just a tinkerer. LOL! I can only see having issues when working with LED's individually. Any production indicator will have all the proper circuitry to prevent failing.

LED's are light emitting DIODES. Not as tough or robust as rectifier/power diodes but diodes just the same.

As with all things, abuse them enough and they will fail, the only difference between the two types is the amount of abuse they can take before they go bang

More like a small fizz, but I guess bang works too.

Just done this mod after all four indicators flashed and it knocked out my fuel light. Now the indicators work as they should and I've got my fuel light back thanks for the write up.

I slid my Mille into a wall at the track, and the result was the blinker switch to the left flashed all four blinkers. The blinker switch to the right did nothing. I disassembled the switch, swapped the relay (behind the dash) and nearly traced all circuits. This mod brought my blinkers back to working normally, but the dash light doesn't work. Also, one my resistor packs (super bright leds) on the rear blinkers was damaged. Therefore, I had to build a new resistor board to get it working. I have a full led set up, and got it working with resistor packs, originally.

I only add this because the rewiring on the dash got my blinkers working, but did not fix my dash light. Also, resistors were still needed to get my led turn signals working. Living in CT means few people use their turn signals, so I'm fixing this for my own amusement. I can provide specs/pics if anyone wants to see how to build their own resistor boards.

If you did the dash mod, the only thing you still need is a LED (aka Electronic) Flasher relay and you can eliminate the Resistor packs. Those only add a load so the relay can switch. With an LED relay they aren't necessary.

Did you try swaping out the dash light with a bulb that is known to work? It could simply be busted, and causing all of the problems you were having.
