    Question Eating belts?!?

I recently purchased a pre-owned 2001 Malaguti Phantom F12 with a 70cc kit. The odometer indicated less than 500 miles.

Shortly after purchase, and after I rode about 100 miles, the belt broke. The broken belt had a Yamaha part number, and was non-kevlar. I replaced the belt with a Malossi Kevlar # 6112729.

After I put on 250 miles with the new kevlar belt, this belt failed. I don't often hear of kevlar belts breaking, so I chalked it up to a bad installation on my part.

I had yet another kevlar belt installed, but this time by a scooter mechanic to ensure the installation was done properly. I've put on approximately 300 miles since this belt was installed, and this past Sunday the kevlar belt failed again.

Does anyone know what is causing these continual belt failures? One regular belt failure, and two kevlar belt failures in the past 10 weeks.

The clutch bell housing indicates heat. Does this explain the belt failure? Will the installation of a Malossi Fly Clutch remedy the belt failure, or are there other issues here?

when the clutch bell turns blue it means that the clutch is slipping and producing a lot of heat so i would recommend and racing clutch i.e mhr delta clutch and a decent racing clutch bell and your clutch slip problem will b resolved. the only reason i can see that this will affect the belt is possibly the heat that is coming off of it or else its just down 2 poor quality belts but then again kevlar belts are the strongest ones goin so theres something wrong there.

At the advice of someone who claims to be knowledgeable, I recently purchased the following from Malossi USA:

    Malossi Fly Clutch - Part # 52 9450
    Malossi Multivar Variator - Part # 51 7075
    MHR Yellow Variator Spring - Part # 29 7045
    Malossi Sport Springs Set Delta/Fly Clutch - Part # 29 8746

Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to install these items yet.

crack5111: Where can I find a Racing Clutch Bell? On Malossi's website, would a "Wing Clutch Bell" be considered a racing clutch bell?

yer the malossi mhr wing bell is a 'racing clutch bell' and a good choice as it is reinforced and also has the cooling fins so should keep a lot cooler than the original.

    is your vario spring still stock? maybe your belt is slipping that's why you're destroying it, i only have the regular Malossi Kevlar belt 61 7210 on my aerox but i haven't destroyed it yet, here's my transmission setup btw;

    Ueno Demon vario kit
    24g rollers (4g x 6)
    Malossi yellow vario spring
    Malossi white clutchsprings
    Malossi torquedriver
    stock clutch
    stock bell

i have no problems with the stock clutch slipping even with a tuned 70cc kit (Polini Corsa) & 15/42 gearing, the scooter accelerates just fine, i really suspect the vario spring to be too soft hence the belt slips & generates too much heat which destroys it.

wingbell would be a great choice since it has cooling fins machined on the reinforcing ring, this is what we use for racing (track or strip), coupled with a Delta clutch (never tried a Fly) it offers max power transfer when fully engaged, just make sure you tighten the nut on the wingbell so you don't strip the splines.
