Common problems/issues With RXV/SXV 450-550

Please only list conformed problems and keep it factual. Please no personal comments or jokes.
The purpose of this thread in not to discuss or ask questions about the issues, but to simply compile the data so it can all be in one thread.

Please identify your bike(RXV or SXV and weather its a 450 or 550) and list the problem(s) you have had and what the cure was.

Also note how may miles on the bike at the time of maulfunction.

Also feel free to ad any other information that could help others.

1st and only problem i had


(and that several sxv-rxv owners still have)

: the 30A FUSE.

when the bike stay still on garage for weeks or when it is brand new and still on exposition at dealers centers.. the fuse might blows.


then in just few days the battery die and doesn't keep the charge.

cause -----> the 30A fuse on the left side of the bike.

solution ---> replacing the 30A fuse.

Replace the oil filter cover with an aluminum type before it blows off (and it will)

SXV 550

Unable to restart when engine dies when riding ( no sound or action when pressing start button)

Poor speedo cable routing = cable chewed on front disk which shorts out blowing fuse 1 which is a 7.5 amp fuse.

The bike will stall and you get no responce on the starter button.

Solution.....

Replace fuse and chewed speedo cable ( better routing required.)

SXV450 track only 100-120 ml engine oil in 80 min of bike time , about the same as my CRF450 .


when i got it out of the crate it blew a fuel pump fuse when we tried to start it , the fuel pump had siezed up stripped it blew it out and a tap with a hammer it was good to go ,put i back in and it fired first hit of the button . it must have been in the crate a long time with old fuel still in it .

biggest problem is keeping rear tires up it it it loves laying big black lines out of every corner

yours also has a problem keeping upright... gravitational pull perhaps with all that gold

If you put the "Billet Radiator Guards For SXV/RXV" be careful, because if you fall hard to the right side of the bike(RXV 450, dificult trail), you can break (puncture) the oil level pipe. It is hard to think you can do it, but this weekend in the national I DID IT. First I thougt it was oil from the catch can (as Orange showed us), but it was a lot. So I stopped and followed it, and saw that it was coming from the tube.

Thanks for pointing that out, I have found too many faults with the French guards, where they can actually cause more damage, to your bike than just a bent radiator. There are better designs, just not being made for our bikes yet.

On one of our 550`s, we had the rod puncture the oil tank, on the left side, and destroyed the throttle cable also.

stall the bike while riding and it will not restart without turning off key. especially if tip switch has been tripped.

some bits rattled loose but thats it!! 1000k -sxv 450.

The chain, rides on the slider a long distance on these bikes, so keep your chain well lubed, I use Honda HP chain lube, comes in a red can, Not The Blue Can, it`s one of the best chain lubes.

They break right rear turn signals if you look at them funny. They're the crappiest design I've ever seen. If your leg/foot touches it while swinging over it's history.

I went through a quart and a half in a matter of 10 min. Because of the service bullitin about the oil seal from the crank case to the breather hose to the air box. Now my motor is siezed, hoping to get my money back. These are no doubt one of the best and fastest supermoto bikes out there, but the reliability issuses has turned me away from them. I headed back to Jap sport bike land now.

Your bike will blow the engine if youre not following the maintainance intervals.. If you have derestricted your engine you aint following the intervals for homologated versions anymore, its a racebike and need the sport or race use maintainance intervals..

Do this and you will be doing good..
