They are great! Mine has 600miles as a street bike. It gets ridden hard. Wheelies and all the hooliganism that comes with it. My buddy has one too. Both 550's both with no problems. I think that it seems like a lot of problems because for every one problem there are many without so they dont post.

No doubt some have had issues. Many of the issues have been caused by ignorant dealers who have not set the bike up properly.
It is a great bike and everytime I ride mine I get off and stare at it and say, "This is the most fun motorcycle I have ever ridden".
I live close to lots of twisty roads where the bike belongs--that or at my somewhat local track. I do not believe the bike is happy in more urban settings and for freeway riding--Let me rephrase that; it sucks in urban and freeway riding because the seat is too narrow and the engine gets hot. Others may disagree. They simply have a higher pain tolerance.
Additionally, it helps if you are mechanically inclined. Some of the whining about these bikes is from people who cannot change a spark plug--let alone find it on the bike.
You must be motorcycle savvy, willing to do some tweaking and not expect DRZ reliabiliity without maintanance.
Per the previous poster, 600 miles is nothing. It is not even close to broken in. After 1000 miles the bike fucking screams and will keep you very alert.
If you get the 550 have a great time and recognize that she is a bi-polar blond who loves to ride but hates to dawdle about and be a poser.
No regrets with mine, that's for sure! Last weekend I finally got it out on the track, after around 600 miles of intense street hooliganism. What a beast! I really can't imagine a more fun bike. I'm sure it will require lots of TLC in the maintenance department, but so far, I couldn't be happier.
Yep picked it up at moto international. They have been an aprilia dealer for a long time and they have techs that know what they are talking about. It was an easy choice for me. It was a good dealer experience also, they are nice guys.

I'm about to buy one too... the closest Aprilia dealer to me is like 50 miles away(I am in Chicago).... and sadly I know very little about maintaining a bike. There used to be a dealer right next to me but he stopped carrying aprilia... I'm hoping when I have problems that he might be able to fix it, he represents all the other italian manufactureres out there.
Reckless, sounds like trouble, buy the KTM or Husky, like waxxer said, just trying to be straight up.
Only regret that I really have is that mine was not de-restricted before taking delivery. Dealer promised to do so as part of purchase price after I went thru 500 mile "break-in". Don't even ride it restricted! Now that I have had starter-related problems after only 60 miles, I am without bike for almost a month waiting for parts at least another month. Make sure that all updates to mapping, flywheel, stator bolts etc are done before signing on the dotted line. If you find yourself dealing with Aprilia USA after you buy, you will be. It did not help that my local dealer went out of business two days after purchase. After riding a buddy's bike fully de-restricted the smile could not be wiped off my face for days. Just want to experience the same on mine sooner rather than later. Get it opened up and re-mapped immediately, change the oil often and just try to keep the front wheel down when in sight of the Po-Po's and you will love this bike. That's my hope for sure.

I love my 550. I've got an RS250 and a Factory too, but the 550 is NOT perfect. There are definitely issues with the motors and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Still, I'm confident that it'll sort out. I'm at 1,000 miles, but there are "ISSUES."

Do you trust your dealer to be straight with you? Remember the bike is a slow seller, you have some leverage!!!
+1 and the 450 is even slower so you can get a really good deal and it is a lot better bike , does not have half the problems of the 550 , 550 is not that much quicker it feels it but lap times are around the same .Do you trust your dealer to be straight with you? i wish the closest one to me is in singapore over 2000 km away and i brought my bike from aus 10,000 km away . the reason is i have 2 in the uk and they are that good i had another one shipped to thailand .
so buy yourself a new toy
