I've receved that engine as a gift..... it had a fatigue crack on the cylnder 1 rod... inside is a really big mess
... the broken rod cutted in half the countershaft!
I' m trainig to save the heads at least (is a big valve motor)

oooh, now you have the new fashionable bendy valves - gives an additional kick to the cylinder...
Actually, just wondering which came first? If the valves hit the cylinder first then the impact could have bent the valves and broke the con rod? Though I guess if the rod broke first and left the cylinder stranded it would be quite a whack when the valves hit the cylinder.
What is in that large box, behind the bent valves?![]()
take more pics as you tear it down, this is interesting.
This is the front cylinder intake camshaft, it took the punch from the bent valves; the original position of the cam lobes is the red line, they spun around 50 degrees:
Anyway, i was able to save just a little from this engine... the heads ('01, big valves- to be overhouled), the transmission and a bunch of bolts![]()

Hey Gabro
What condition were the cam chain tensioners in on this motor? Reason I ask is one of mine was failing and it really made for some strange erratic running until it finally failed, so as it ran erratically the cam timing was changing due to the slack in the chain. When the tensioner finally did fail the cam chain slapped loudly against the case as the engine was hovering around 9~10,000 rpm...not pretty. Luckily there was no damage to the engine and we were able to shut it down before anything else happened. I got tensioners from Micah and replaced the one on the front cylinder, interesting enough the gas readings from the front cylinder were erratic during the runs indicating that there was an issue occurring and we could never get the front to balance with the back. What I am wondering is if the tensioner in this motor failed and allowed the cam timing to change enough to crash the valves.
